Micway
Hello All, I have a colony of Labidochromis Hongi which are healthy and active. In the space of 4 months I have only had 2 batches of fry. The ratio is 1 male - 6 females ( Lucky Boy )!! Is there any specific way to trigger them? Buccal
Rather than searching for a trigger, look at the requirements for successful breeding. (Make sure they aren't deprived or stressed from anything). eg,,,. 27'c, heavy surface aggetation for oxygen, keeping filters in blocked to keep nitrates at a low, no over feeding, weekly water changes, KH levels 8-12 higher bracket better, correct foods. Are they by themselves ?, as they always breed better in a species only tank. What size tank are they in, as they havnt outgrown it have they ?. We need to know your complete settings, so we can tell you how long your piece of string is......
Link2Hell
Hi Mickway and welcome to ACE as well as the info noted by Buccal structure is important to Hongi being an mbuna and they respond to rocks and caves do you have any tank picks
Skippy
Good advice as always from Buccal. Something else to consider is the single male. I've had single males of other mbuna species get a bit lazy without any competition. As soon as some competition arrives with a new male they decide it is time to start sowing their wild oats. Micway
Thanks for the replies:) The Hongi's are kept in a species only 4 foot tank with a side drop filter with 2 outlets so the surface is well aggetated. The is also a sponge filter in there also. The tank has many caves, pots and holy rock so hiding places is not a problem. The PH is kept at 8 and the KH around the 10 mark. Temperature at 27. Maybe he has lost his mojo I'm not suggesting he is shooting blanks. What I'm saying is there is no competition for him so he doesn't need to worry about another male doing the deed if he doesn't get there first.
