That Cichlid Guy
Ok so there not as rare as the fish shop tried to tell me! Lol do you guys breed them? If so what do you normally sell fry for? Just don't want to be ripped off.
That Cichlid Guy
I've also read that they are a more peaceful sp. is this true?
LithoMan
They are a rare fishThe 2 breeders that said they have themWould have paid good $$$$ to get them hereMy suggestion to anyone breedingRare or not you should breed a fish that you like Its a hobby not a money making businessunless electricity is free lol
That Cichlid Guy
Couldn't agree more LithoMan, if only electricity was free! I've recently sold a lot of my fish to focus more on the rarer stuff. Not only to make sure we don't lose them from the hobby, but to make them more affordable for everyone. I'm not in this to make money, as long as I can pay the electricity bill I'm happy! Lol

That Cichlid Guy
Anyone keep other species with them or is it best to keep them by themselves?
Buccal
There are full bar and broken bar Paro's,,, the full bar are slightly rarer as far as amount in oz are.I only sell mine to Sydney as Perth isn't up to scratch with rare fish value. There must remain a structured catergory to pricings on fish. Can't make them all worth the same, keep that in mind.Sometimes making a rare fish cheap is what stops serious breeders from continuing them,,, (across the board value reduction)Some fish should be worth much more than others,,, it keeps it interesting to.So keep this in mind,, it's a responsibility. That Cichlid Guy
I understand that, obviously if breeding them you ask for what there worth. But what I'm getting at is making the population of rare species more available so we don't end up loosing these guys from the hobby. I would prefer to see no more species disappear from Australia than anything else. The price question is only for me to gain knowledge as the ones I have found are from a petshop, and if at all possible, I would rather get them from a breeder where I can ensure quality. I am willing to pay good money for quality, but with petshops, who knows the genetic backgrounds of the stock!
That Cichlid Guy
On the broken bar and full bar, which is this:
Buccal
Exactly what I have,, full bar. These fish are new anyway and has never been established here.A lot of shops in Sydney do buy from many reputable breeders from what I have found.Sydney likely has best quality control,, shops and long term breeders. That Cichlid Guy
Ok well that's good to know about the shops. The full bar are the ones I want then. So being such an attractive fish, why have they never been established here? Are they hard to breed or just not popular?
LithoMan
some fish are not allowed in the countryunless someone decides to come up with good $$$$$ mysteriously they show up we need more people to get in to victorians and keep them pure as possible because over the years in australia many have gone wrong. Link2Hell
TCG when something new arrives it comes down to whoever buying themgets to breed them looks to have back up stock and to recoup the initial costbut someone has to spend first before they can be distributed if they are bredother variables depends on available quantity and number of buyers they are sold toand in todays market where people close down due to the cost of water and powerinvesting in first release can have a limited initial market but plenty waiting for theprices to dropdepending on the fish and it's spawning potential plus wether they are released inbatches or just dumped on the market will dictate the pricingIt works out about 30-50% of the initial purchase price of the breeders most timesfor the first few releases and the gradually reduces with increased breeding andmarket demand
That Cichlid Guy
I really should have given this post a different name, gone a bit of topic! Lol thanks for all the info guys, I have learned a lot more than I could have hoped for. Would love to see some sort of register developed to determine what species need proper genetical work and strengthening of strains in Australia. I've become very passionate about my fish, or addicted as my mrs likes to put it! Lol I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see something like this happen. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

That Cichlid Guy
I happen to be working on the Ruti island form Buccal! Lol if I'm not mistaken. I'll try to get a nice shot of my male. I have a really nice unrelated girl in with him now so just waiting to find a few more cracking looking girls from different sources.
That Cichlid Guy
My guy looks identical to this one. Try to get a nice shot of him tomorrow.
Buccal
Hmm nice,,,, I was unaware that there was a True Ruti island, other than what I have. The pic you have posted is the Mwanza location of flameback. There are maybe over 50 locations of flameback 'nyeri'.My ruti is Pure 100%. Cost me big $ for 12 x 3cm fish. With ruti,,, the vertical bars of yellow is extra bright popping yellow. And back is really red.Majority of nyeri blood line in oz is tainted and purity is doubted, so now regarded as oz bloodline.Every single male of my bloodline is all identically stunning. The fry are notably a brighter yellowy/orangey glow in color.Ruti also seem to have a tad pointier nose and slightly more slender body. That Cichlid Guy
Ahh ok, they sound awesome would love to see a pic of your boys. One thing I have noticed is a lot of the ones going around have a lot of misplaced black speckling over the body. I paid good money for mine because they are stunning. I'll have to get some pics up for you to take a look at for me today if I can.
Buccal
Because they are so aggressive,, the black speckling are basically war wounds. When the fish gets nipped and abrasions occur,,, those areas heal up leaving the black markings,,, happens a lot on Africans. If one of the mods can help and willing to put my pic up like offered by Ged before with a standard email address I can send it to.Then I'll send it
That Cichlid Guy
Ok that makes sense. Hopefully they can help out with the pic
