Paul_S
Three days ago, I bought 6 silver dollars about 3 to 4cm round for my 6 foot tank. There is currently no other fish in this tank. When stationary they are vertical (normal) but when they swim they are at 45º angle. Is this normal or do they have a problem? It is the first time I have owned silver dollars.Thanks,Paul. Ducksta
Sounds a bit weird to me. Mine sometimes swim slightly nose down - but nowhere near 45. I have 8 ranging from 12-16cm.Are they all doing it?I'd give them a bit of time and keep my eye on it. There's probably not much you can do anyway. Topogigio
That's because they are swimming perpendicular to the light source in your room... It's quite normal

You could be right. Its funny because I have not light on that tank and the only light comes from windows and a sliding door. They all seem healthy enough and eat well. I will keep an eye on them. Firemouth
He is right.Mine lean toward the nearest window when the lights off.I find it awkward just looking at them. They straighten up when I turn the light on.Some of the other fish do it too. Mind you, the silver dollars are the first non American cichlid I have own in many years and I have never noticed my cichlids swimming on their sides before. It was also new to me.I've had silver dollars on and off for more than a decade at least... I guess I just don't have windows aiming light in sideways or something? In fact, it wasn't until the explanation was given that I think I even pictured it properly, as I was imagining them swimming still "upright" but just rotated 45 degrees nose down, haha.
