Paul_S
I have used clear plastic sheets about 5mm thick and drilled holes in them for water circulation. I held to top of the sheet in place with the tank lids and placed large rocks at the bottom. It worked well separating 2 CA cichlids until I bought an extra tank. firthy13
Go to Clark rubber and get the blue aquarium filter material cut a to be slightly bigger then your tank. Great divider and adds surface area for filtration. Hear is a good example. Works really well.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yL_yU4-jXUQ

markfnq
Good idea Firthy , but I live in Cairns , for the price of that blue foam up here I could buy another tank ! lol .I have seen the core flute idea with mesh sandwiched between two sheets , but wondering if it would leach out any nasties ?Not sure you would get enough flow using acrylic sheet with holes drilled. firthy13
If you have a massive flow rate through the sponge it does get built up a little. But under typical flow rates based on tank size the waste normally just stays on the bottom of the tank as per usual. It's really does work well.
