Firemouth
G'day gang. The last few weekends a bloke down the road has been selling half wine barrels for $55.Been thinking of getting a couple to use as ornaments (fish keeping devices) in the yard.Anyway, went down for a look and saw that they were genuine wine barrels with dried wine residue still caked inside..My question is.How do I go about getting rid of this residue and how long will it take to be safe to put fish in them?If anyone knows ........ firthy13
I would fill it with hot water to soften it and then blast it with a pressure cleaner. Next you will have to go get some paint on resin pond liner/water proofing to seel the inside and you should be right to go once dry.I have a mate who keeps goldfish and koi in wine barrels with aquatic plants. Looks great.
Firemouth
Being wine barrels they seal themselves when the wood swells with water so hopefully sealant shouldn't be necessary.I'm more worried about the possible alcohol content leached into the barrel and the possibility of the alcohol or other toxins leaching into the water.Maybe it has evaporated out already and have nothing to worry about.Dunno. dazzman
if you seal it then you don't have to worry about what affect the wood/wine/toxins will have on the water.

Josh
If you seal them, the wood can dry out, and this may leed to them falling apart over time.
Firemouth
Oop..... Not sealing them again Thanks for replying folks. Reakon this is what I'll do.Buy a couple.Soak them and blast out remaining residue with high pressure hose.Fill them with water.Insert lily pads.Add el cheapo long finned white clouds to 1.Add el cheapo long finned Rosy barbs to the other. If they live ... I'll declare the water safe
vadnappa
You could try testing the water with daphnia. That way if they die no real loss of cash and if they live, bonus live food
