hoody
hi all, first post here.i recently bought a 2nd hand eheim 2215, the guy i bought it off seemed genuin enough and offered for me to see it running i denied and said not to worry.ends up i probably should have taken him up on the offer there is a small leak on the top outlet ive tried gas tape tightening and loosening the fitting, i can get it to slow down but its not water tight. i'm not quite sure how much to tighten it before i ruin the thread?any ideas on what i could try next?here is a few picsCheers. dazzman
It doesnt look like the hose is the right size for the connection. It looks like the inside diameter is too big or the outside diameter is too small.
spedwards
The water seal has nothing to do with the threads themselves, the nut simply screws up to clamp the hose onto the nipple fitting. So the use of silicon tape isn't going to fix the problem.Wind the nut all the way down and check the hose for cracks, or as dazzman says, that the hose isn't too large a diameter for the nipple fitting. The hose should go on fairly tight and form the seal, the nut will then hold it place once the system is under pressure.
hoody
Thanks guys, that particular part of hose was to long for my set up so I have cut it. It was leaking before and after the cut.So maybe the hose is the wrong diameter? I googled earlier today that the hose is a 12/16 diameter, can anyone confirm that? I had a look at bunnings today I could not find any that size any other places that might sell it?Thanks again..
spedwards
That seems to be correct based on the information the Eheim website:http://www.eheim.com/en_GB/products/technology/external-filters/classic-350#technologyThe easiest place to source it is probably your LFS. You don't have to get the green Eheim hose, any old aquarium 12/16mm filter hose would be fine.
hoody
Yeah I kinda like that I can see through the hose for air bubbles etc...I stop by tomorrow and let you guys know.
ozbloke74
Looks like you wound thread tape on anti-clockwise and not high enough on male flange, if its an anticlockwise thread then tape is on correctly, clockwise and all you end up doing is winding thread tape back down the thread. firthy13
i had the same problem with the inlet on a 2217. if you have a look at the green ehiem hosing, the wall thinkness of the tube is alot thicker then the clear stuff you get from bunnings. your options are to buy the correct hose or do what i did and wrapped tape around the hose where the nut crimps in on to the outlet nozzle. Josh
I believe what Firthy said is correct. The two numbers (12/16mm) in the internal and external dimensions. The cheap tube from bunnings will leak, is that the tube you bought it with?Josh
hoody
Yeah that's the tube that it came with, I bought some aqua one tube today tried it with no plumbers tape it still leaked out some more tape on it's still leaking? Not sure what else to do? The bottom has the same tube on it no leaks there but I just changed that to the new tube as wellCheers

spedwards
Can you wind the screw all the way down and take a photo to show us how far down onto the fitting the hose is sitting? And maybe a photo of the barb fitting it's attaching to?It looks like you've got a leak from the tap in the background also.

ozbloke74
Bunnings will probably have a barb retic fitting that will fit straight on, cut hose , slip over barb, tighten clamp. Fixed
hoody
Do you think that the canister side would be a female then?
hoody
Pulled the barb off if the canister, cleaned it up a bit. Managed to put the hose over the thread clamped it with a hose clamp no more leaks. This will do for a temp fix till my new cover comes. Cheers. spedwards
I was going to suggest that but I thought you might get leaks, good to hear that it's working as an interim solution!
