Fish shipping

Probably a silly question , ive been contemplating bringing some fish over from the east coast to western australia, as ive had limited experience with shipping before i was curious how the fish handle the distance and what logistics are typically involved, estimated shipping costs if anyone has done it before , im 2 hrs from domestic airport so all up i would anticipate fish would be spending 5-7hours total transit in bags/containers. More than likely i will go for tropheus or petrochromis for my 4*2*2. Any input appreciated

Hi mate

It's really easy & nothing to b too worried about!

Fish handle the distance no dramas!!

When sending fish to WA i put them on the earliest flight from Sydney!

Once I've booked them in I would get in contact let u know what time to

Pick them up aswel as tha connote number.

U will pick them up from aae/quantas freight depot at your closest

Demestic terminal.

Freight cost vary on weight/depending on how many fish u want!

A box usually cost $120+

All u do is rock up say your there to pickup a box of live fish & show your ID.

It's really simple mate remember we get fish sent from Germany

So them making it over to WA is no major drama!

Hope I have answered your question

Cheers Chad

just make sure you buy from someone reputable. i have had some great success, but have seen others get burnt. feel free to PM me if you would like more info!

you will also need to call up quarantine beforehand and arrange an inspection of the box. this is free of charge for private buyers, but needs to be done during business hours. keep in mind that stuff happens and flights get delayed. so sending fish on friday or even thursday can be risky business.

I got tropheus sent from South Australia to Newcastle. They were dropped off at the airport at 5am and were ment to arrive at 3.30pm. But with all the delays I received them at 10pm. I got them home and into the tank by 11.30pm. Never lost a fish even though they were in bags for 19hrs. Apart from the delay stuff arounds my experience was great. Hope this easers your mind.

All private buyers are now being charged $50 inspection fee,,, this is a recent change.

The AWB or con note number is completely useless,,, in Perth they don't use it for tracking.

As a receiver in Perth you will need time of arrival and most importantly is the flight number.

These two are needed to book quarantine the day before or 3-5 hours before required inspection.

The sender must send on one of last two flights for your pickup first thing next day morning.

Or better is the sender sends one of the first two flights for afternoon inspection,,, this option is better as they get to you faster,

Quarantine will not take bookings for inspections after 3 pm.

If the sender sends on any other flight mentioned then it will result in extended transit time ten fold.

Extended transit time then determines on how well the senders abilities are on shipping preparation.

If clean water is used to bag up, ammo lock added and oxygen with correct fish amounts in bags,,,, and a 2-3 day fastening prior,,,, then the extended time should not bother them.

Yeah tranced, tell me about it, the shops and people with business accounts were getting charged as per normal, so they were a bit wee wEEed of seeing private people not getting charged.

They actually call you up at the end of day and ask for your postal address to send the bill to now.

And Jim,,, on your phone or computer,,,, google quantas.com.au.

Go into flight status and enter info,,,,, from Sydney to Perth and the day of week.

If you drop your parcel 1.5 hours or earlier than a departure time then it will make it onto that flight.

The flight status will give you time of arrival and flight number.

This way you don't have to bug AAE and you can dodge some of the arrogant people at these places.

Excellent replies thanks guys, im confident now i can land some fish here with everybody's input. Now the hard part , do i want tropheus illangi or petrochromis, Ive owned tropheus moliros and duboisi before and enjoyed raising them up, but i do like the look of those red petrochromis, dont know a lot about them to be honest, apart from prefered water chemistry and they get big and eat like garbage cans. What are peoples thought on the two head to head?

  • 1 month later...

If anyone chasing tropheus or petrochromis I highly recommend Tropheus Jim, I now have some of jims kasanga reds in my tank, thanks for a painless transaction.

It was a pleasure Adrian....enjoy them
