rowie
hias the title states i have been getting alot of calls lately regarding my foai karilani coppers and there fry and that they are 1 of the last lot of real karilanis leftmy question is what have people been palming off as coppers to have the population of the species in aust get to the point were there are fakes and the point where finding real coppers is hardare they just cross breeds or are there people palming of any foai as a copperi planned on sourcing some more for my colony as it is getting quite old now 5years+ and my girls are slowing up but i'm a bit concerned about adding any more if this is the caseany one else heard of the fakescheers rowie
shon982
Foai - Sibwesa, Kapampa, Karalini, Kabogo are all known as coppers as well thoughSo I think saying "coppers" is a pretty broad range of variantsUnless you're talking specifically as people mixing up Karalinis with other variants
rowie
hence why i made the topic about karilani coppers as these are what i am getting the calls aboutnot to sure if its due to mixing the varients or people selling other varients as karilani's which are later cross breed
shon982
my question is what have people been palming off as coppers to have the population of the species in aust get to the point were there are fakes and the point where finding real coppers is hardare they just cross breeds or are there people palming of any foai as a copperThis is the part I was referring to where there was no mention Karalini's, just coppers in general

Ged
There is only one Karilani Copper.People seem to place the common name "Copper" after Cyathopharnyx furcifer and Cyathopharnyx foai from various collection points. Then forget about the collection point and just lump them as Karilani Coppers.
chorrylan
There is only one Karilani Copper.and I gather the real ones are rarely seen in the lake let alone in importers tanks but quite a bit of incentive for importers etc to attach the label to pretty much any green/copper foai from the general area. What's the lineage of yours Rowie?there was an import by bayfish (I think) early in the noughties Or very late ninetees that we're bred by John fleet down here in Canberra who sold fry back through bayfish and others then sold the original colony to Ben moremon. ( photos of Ben's fish pop up in importers/exporters lists to give some perspective on just how few are about worldwide)There was a fair variation in coloration in the fish john and ben had So unplanned line breeding from such a limited genepool could account for a fair range from good to bad now even if nothing shonky has happened.here's some photos of youngsters from yesteryear beginning to colour up (fry from just before Ben bought the colony )http://www.planetchan.com/laurie/pets/fish/karilani_copper/I didn't see them as adults So don't know if they went on to develop their dad's colour. Ben
It's not going to be easy to add to your colony Rowie as there are/where a lot of fry being sold quiet cheap about a year or two ago labled Karilani Coppers. They were using my pictures to flog the fry I believe and I have sice heard these fish may not be what they were meant to be. I am yet to see the colony in the flesh to confirm but will report back when I do.As Laurie has said there were verious colour differance in the males so it could be just this or it could be they have been mixed with other locations. These two pictures are of my original males purchased from John. The first being the domint fish but who is to say was the father of all the fry John and I produced.Shane and Shell purchased my Karilani when I went overseas for work back in March 2007. Hopefully, and I am sure they do still have the geniune Cyathopharynx foai Karilani "Coppers".

rowie
firthy13 i have already added 16 fry back into the colony i ask because i was offered some at a reasonable price but when i asked where they came from all i got was troy in sydney which means nothing to meben my bloodline came from shane and shells parents they were bought by luke a friend of mine who shut up shop last year and i purchased his colonyhe had no luck breeding them as he works in the mines and is never home since then i have had 3 mouthfuls 2 of which were held to term the other spat at 7 daysi may have to try get hold of shane and shell to see if they have a few more fry but with that said i'm not sure if they still keep them as i haven't seen any fry advertised

shellfish
Hi guys,Wow, I am so saddened to hear how dire the situation is for Karilani Coppers. Because I don't frequent the forums much these days, I wasn't aware this was the case, last I heard there were quite a few so called "Karilani Coppers" being imported, but I'm a bit out of the loop these days (I wouldn't have seen this post if it didn't happen to show on my facebook page!). If I'd known how bad things were, my small colony would have been getting alot more TLC! Mine haven't bred for quite a long time and I'm not sure my male ever will, he is starting to show some age now. If you find yourself with a few spare males, Rowie, let me know. We need to get these guys back out there for the next generation of fish keepers!Good luck with yours!!
