Red/Orange Malawi Tank mate

hi all,

I am in the process of setting up my 4x1.5x2 tank. I have about 45 kilos of rock in there with lots of hiding places.

I currently have 8 Interruptus and 8 pulpican along with a rather lonely Hongi (he was mispicked from the guy i bought the fry from)

I am hoping to have 2 males of each species and 6 females.

Can i fit another colony in? if so does anyone have suggestions for a smallish (max 6 inches) Red or oranged coloured fish. I have looked at psuedotropheus perspicax. I am not sure on their temperament though.

I don't particularly want peacocks or red zebras.

Really just want to know what else is out there as i have limited stock in the LFS around where i live

Maybe a colony of Labeotropheus trewevasae 'mpanga red' but not sure if hey are in OZ but there are many attractive varieties. The other option is to look at the OB morphs of a few species if that floats your boat. If you were willing to look at a Victorian maybe a phytophagus etc but from what I've heard they can become quite aggressive.

Cheers

To the best of my knowledge, L. trewavasae "Mpanga" has never been here. We have only seen "Thumbi West" and "Maleri" in the Australian hobby. However, I would not recommend that species, as it is extremely aggressive - to the point where it would make phytophagus look like a good friend. lol

For some interesting reds and oranges...

Malawi:

Copadichromis borleyi "Kadango"

Lethrinops sp. "Red Cap"

Labidochromis sp. "Hongi"

Red Empress

Ps. perspicax is quite aggressive, but I think you have enough room in that size tank.

Victoria:

Pundamilia nyererei "Makobe Island"

Astatotilapia latifasciata

Haplochromis sp. 44 "Thickskin"

Hope this helps,

Andrew.

Thanks andrew, i was worried about how aggresive perspicax can be. i am hoping with the size of the tank that they would be fine but i was looking for some other options.

I will have a look online at some of the other species that you have recommended.

I think i might be addicted to this hobby.....

my brother joked that it would happen.

Thats interesting your thoughts on the trewevasae. My experience with them was that they got got bullied by my saulosi's. I suppose you get different temprements in fish. Almost everything I have read notes a 50gal+. I kept themin a 50gal and theywere fine and really kept to themselves.

Hi Trav,

They were some mellow trewavasae... :) I have been breeding them for a long time now, the OB "Maleri" variant, and they aren't friendly... Still, these fish are as individual as we are - whilst on the whole I would say that the species is too much of a bully for the above tank, I concede that I have met Red Devils that were placid community cichlids, and Aulonocaras that have terrorised and killed their tankmates! lol

Andrew.
