TALLNEV
I just picked up some oyster shells from the fish market. I am wanting to know before putting them in my tank do I need to boil them or something. I lost 30 frontosa fry when I put a dodgy rock with oysters on it in one of my tanks before and I dont want to lose any fish this time.
Guest Panga
TALLNEV, Last time i used some oyster shells i just boiled them up for about 15 mins. Then let them dry outside in the sun. Just to be on the safe side i boiled them again for another 15mins and let dry in the sun again. They worked fine after boiling a few times and i never had any probs. ViS
Just be careful. They are pretty sharp as you probably know. A large fish could do itself a nasty injury on a shell like that. If you have access to a cement mixer (well he might!), tumble them for 10 minutes and it should take the sharp edges off pretty well. Otherwise if there aren't too many, a sanding block will do a decent job. Just don't cut yourself while doing it.
