Noddy65
No substrate??? They enjoy it but dont really NEED it as such... Having said that I will be adding fine grain sand when I get a chance and will be adding it to the new tanks for some new apistos when they arrive in 2 weeks Mike
rosco
Well there goes the Apisto market . Nice videos Mike I have some apisto's on order from Jodi Lee (some Apistogramma agassizii "double red"). They are the first soft water cichlid I have tried so here's hoping it goes well. What are you getting next? Any suggestions as tohow to keep them? cheers Rosco

Jodi lee has top quality fish at great prices...I wish there was a store like this in Sydney Most apistos like soft acidic water but also require low solutes (some say this is MORE important than low ph)...if possible try not use any of the ph lowering water additives, they do lower ph but increase the solutes in the water substantially. Im using rainwater and Oak leaves in mine..the water is very soft but Im struggling to get the ph down. You can also use Indian Almond leaves and a recent thread on another forum suggests using camelia leaves. Ill also be filtering my water through peat to try and reduce ph. Heres what Ive ordered. I saw these on the net a few years ago and have always wanted them Apistogramma abacaxis A. morado 'purple Mike
rosco
very nice fish there Mike. by solutes I assume carbonate hardness. Canberra water comes out at 40ppm of carbonate hardness but the pH is high around 7.8. I managed to pick up a reverse osmosis filter from the setup I just bought is it worth trying to work how to use it. cheers rosco
Noddy65
An RO unit would be ideal...I had one in Perth when I had a bigger apisto collection. There is a fair bit of waste water but I used that for my Africans (the water is nice and hard) Mike
