Saleable size for Alto Comps?

Hi guys,

Just wondering what most people believe to be the saleable size for Altolamprologus Compressiceps? They are indeed painfully slow growing. I want to be sure they are big enough to survive transportation etc. before I start getting rid of the fry I have. The larger ones I have are probably touching 2.5-3cm, but still seem a little small for my liking. I would have not problems at all selling Tropheus at that length, but these guys seem a bit more delicate.

Any info would be appreciated.

Cheers

Shane

Yep, got to be one of the slowest growers around.

3cm should be fine, as they are much older at that size as other's would be 6cm at same age.

I dont think the transportation is a prob, but those that have differant water, etc Put the fish in the search up the top right and you will see what others are selling them at and size.

Cheers guys, I'm sure they are reasonably robust but they still appear quite narrow in the body compared to the adults. I'll see how I go, might even hold on to them for a bit longer until the smaller ones are up to size.

being in Tumut must limit your selling market as I don't remember

seeing to many LFS last time I was down there

LFS usually like them at around 3cm minimum unless they are

hard to get

you will have bigger and smaller in the spawn so always try for a

50/50 mix as the size difference will usually be a sexing factor

having said this Altos will be fine moving at a smaller size but

for LFS application they are hard to sell if they are hard to see

what age are they, I'm guessing they will be around 7-9 mths old

when the spawn are around the 2.5 to 3.5 cm size

*sigh* the pain of growing altos.

I've refused to sell my alto fry (black calvus and firefin comps over the times) sight unseen as it's far too difficult to communicate a good idea of size and robustness unless the buyer has raised altos themselves.

(it also allows the buyer to make their own guess at gender instead of me having to convince them that they really do want mostly the small ones rather than a bag full of nice big shiny males)

They are amazingly slow little buggers to grow but rather curiously I find they become sexually active and can breed almost like clockwork at around 18 months of age, regardless of what size they've reached at the time.
