firthy13
i have baught a new sponge filter for a new fry tank i am setting up. i have just put it in my already established tank to get a good colony of bacteria in the sponge. how long do you think it will take for a decent bacteria colony to be present in the new sponge before i tranfer it to the new fry tank? fullychichlid
Hi What I would do is if you are running another filter in the first tank put some media or ring out any sponge or bacteria directly onto the new sponge filter. This will give benificial bacteria in it and i would say it would be ready to go. I did this to mine and had no amonia spike or anything. Even though they are fry dont over feed too much and you should be right.
malrift
Fastest way to do it is wash a sponge of an older filter into a bucket of aquarium water. Then pour this straight into the new tank with sponge filter will be up and going in a couple of days. It will be gunky and leave a bit of a mess but this is a massive concentration of already living bacteria. Plus being a fry tank as long as you stay on top of uneaten food you shouldnt have any problems. This is if your main filter isnt a sponge filter already otherwise just swap the 2 if you have multiple filters in main tank.
