Bulk fish food

Andrew

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm at a point where I need to buy my fish flake in bulk and I am looking for a suggestions as to which foods available are of good quality whilst not exorbitantly expensive.

I have found one called Mac's, produced in QLD, which is very cheap. Its analysis and ingredients look fine when compared with analyses of main brands. Has anyone used this? Feedback?

If you have any other experiences and suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks!

Andrew.

What I would suggest is buy a small amount to see if your fish like it. Or keep using what you are using. There are a number of great foods on the market don't always let price be the factor in buying food. Quality should always out weigh cost but like I said there is several brands that are worth looking at.

Great suggestion Brad. I have purchased bulk flake in the pass and thought I was getting a good deal until I realised that my fish wouldn't touch the stuff.

We recently brought some bulk food from an ebay seller "macsaquariums - Buderim, Queensland".

The name/location may indicate its the same supplier that you're considering.

All our fish really like the Tropical Flake, but the Cichlids can be a little fussy with the floating pellets and Cichlid sticks.

Have thrown away the box now, but I think the Tropical Flake was 'Feedwell' brand and made by Australian Pet Supplies in Sydney.

Given the choice, my kids would have ice cream and lollies every day- and not only "like" it, they would love it. The quality of the food our fish eat, like our kids, can't be judged by their enthusiasm.

Read the ingredients on the back of a fish food container as a good parent will do with a box of cereal.

yer, give them coco pops and rasberry cordial,,,,watch them go!!!!

Good points, I've done the same. Cheap food does not usually go well with the fish.

But you say you have read the contents. I would do as malrift says , sample pack first.Lots of seller's do that.

I think Malrift was suggesting that Andrew tries before he buys in bulk. I know that there is other consideration that need to be taken into account when selecting food for our fish. You need to weigh all these factors and take them into account. In the end it could be the best food out and some fish will not touch the stuff.

Honestly mate i know cost is an issue especially if you have many fish. Personally i started keeping fish about 12 years ago and have bought both brand name and non branded foods over the years.

Even though i always take into consideration the ingrediants/ nutritional values of the foods ive always found that once a fish is accepting of the higher quality brand name foods they seem healthier. For example i had 20 silver dollars recently which i was feeding some non name brand flake food, they grew fairly well on the product but were pretty average to look at and were not really feisty.

I bought a tub of a high quality food for my other fish and once the dollars got a hold of it they grew very fast, they are now bright silver in colour and have bright red fins and gill plates they look fantastic.

I had a similar experience when feeding my africans a few years back. everyone will always have a different opinion but it comes down to what works for you.
