Presty
Hi all.. I recently just got a new 6 ft tank and moved all africans into that, so I now have an empty 3ft tank that I would like to try to breed Electric Yelows in. Im just after some advise on the best way to do this, wether I should try and get hold of a mature breeding colony or get a heap of juviniles and start from scratch??? * If I was to get say 20 juviniles would I have to get them from all different breeders/LFS so as to stop inbreeding/deformaties?? * How long would it take juviniles to mature enough to breed ? * What sort of percentage should I expect out of 20 being male or female? * How long would it take before I could tell male from female and are there any tips on how to tell the difference?? * Would a standard 3 ft tank be sufficent for these guys to breed in and do I need substrate or rocks in the tank?? * How many males to females would I need? * Once I notice a female holding would I then just put her into another tank by herself and she would sort out the rest? or would I have to strip the eggs?? or do I put her into another tank untill she spits out the fry and then I remove her so she wont eat them?? if you cant tell Ive never done this before!! lol I just want to know the best/easiest breeding process? Any help would be awesome! Cheers guys Presty
Andrew
Hey Presty, Well thought out post mate. First up, yes, get your juvies from as many sources as possible. There is always some chance of overlap, but you will reduce the risk of inbreeding through multiple sources. I would recommend males from one source and females from another. Electrice yellows breed from about 6cm, so you could probably buy them ready to go or not far away from it. You should sex the juvies by assessing the amount of black in the dorsal and anal fins. Males will have a vivid black line easily visible. Females will have a finer black line in dorsal fin and little or no black in the anal fin at juvie stage. This way you have a much better idea of sex ratio. They will live and breed in a 3ft tank. With adequate filtration, a comfortable ratio would be two males and eight females. Provide plenty of rockwork/pvc pipe to give resting or holding females a rest. You shouuld have great success in a short space of time. Female yellows are usually very good mums, so once a girl is holding, leave her be (provided she can seek refuge when she needs it) and strip the fully formed fry from her at 2-3weeks. These fry are ready to go into your rearing tank / net. Cheers, Andrew.
Wolfy
We're far from experts, being fairly new ourselves, but this is our experience. We got our E.Yellows - from 4 different vendors - as fry at the start of last year. We had our first batch of babies about 8-9 months later. In general the males are larger and more striking in colour (very black fins etc). I think we have a close to 50-50 mix of males and females - but mostly we know which are the females when they start holding. We have ours and some other mumba in a tank only slightly larger than 3ft. Since they are in a tank with other fish we strip them after 2-3 weeks and put them in a fry saver and then into a 2foot grow-out tank. We have substrate and rocks both for how they look, the fact they give the fish somewhere to hide (when holding the females like to hide out of the way) and to provide water buffering properties. noxious_nasties
1-1 male to female ratio is ok with yellows but the best ratio is around 1 male to 3 females
