Antigunzel
Hi, I'm no expert on cichlids but have kept Oscars before. The only other fish I have ever kept one with were a pair of Salmon Tailed Catfish and they got on quite well. I recently bought a small Red Tiger Oscar and thinking it would look tiny in the tank, asked the guy who ran the shop what else I could keep with it, he suggested a Parrot Cichlid (Hoplarchus psittacus). The Oscar isn't a problem and leaves the other (slightly larger) fish alone but the Parrot seems to be very territorial and often chases the Oscar and bites at it's fins and tail, today it has made a large indentation in the gravel and seems to be preparing for breeding, the water temperature is 26 degrees and I thought that if maybe altering that slightly may change the Parrot's attitude. I'm hoping that someone can suggest something that may help these fish to coexist more peacefully. Thanks, Ron>
Topogigio
whoa!!!! Hoplarchus psittacus in Australia - i didnt know they were here, are you sure it is this fish or a King Kong parrot (hybrid fish), or the Nicaraguensi parrot (Hypsophrys nicaraguensis)? anyways, if the tank is too small, there is little you could do except getting rid of one fish or try to re-arrange the interior decor like moving logs and rocks around. japes
Just from listening in to conversations, I've found stores that actually stock Blood Parrots () are very good at recommending them for every possible setup. Putting my money on Blood Parrot.
Andrew
Yes, Japes, they're everywhere in Sydney - it's been a while since I've seen a lfs without them in stock! Forunately, there are a few stores with enough scruples to refuse them on principle.
