mcloughlin2
Isn't the stuff from plant suppliers usually quite small pebbles almost? Unless I'm wrong the person is actually after rocks that could be stacked for caves etc, not for use as a gravel. Maybe I'm wrong though

Maybe I'm wrong though Generally, when someone is talking about lava rock they mean the red rock alot of ppl put in their garden. mostly in the aquarium trade its used in matrix style filters. its not pebble like at all, im not sure what your referring too. ? mcloughlin2
Well I understand what you are talking about, although it isn't pebble like as such they are still quite small rocks (~50mm). Perhaps I should not have said pebble like, but that was the only simple way I had of describing it. I know many people who use larger pieces of lava rock in aquariums as it is a very light rock and has some very nice colours so makes an excellant choice for when you want to stack the rocks quite high up without wanting to have a fear of one falling and cracking your tank. ......So oz_gooner, what are you after? genetik_defekt
Ok fair enough, you could be right there. But i been doing this for a few years now and anytime someone mentions lava rock it was always in reference to mtrix media etc. Either way im sure oz will let us know

oz_gooner
Hi guys. To clarify it's the larger pieces I'm chasing. Have only known it as lava rock. Sorry if it caused cornfusion. I'm looking at stacking them in my new display tank. Currently I have manly bush rocks mixed with some blushing sandstone, looks great but I'm after a different look for the new tank and hope it will be a bit lighter as well. Prefer local so I get a look at before hand but might have to go interstate. Got to get my finger out too. Have fry almost ready to be spat in my current display tanks. Your correct it is called lava rock. I have also heard it being called pumix aswell but thats incorrect as pumix is a different rock. The rocks pictured in the above link look great. I'd snap them up if he was local to me.
