Hi Guys

My AquaOne CF1000 filter keeps getting airlocks and blowing bubbles through the outlet line. I usually give it a shake and tilt it to its side to clear it, but its becoming more and more frequent. Just now i gave it a shake and it blew cloudy water all through my tank and the airlock doesnt seem to want to blow through. I just changed about 20% of the water to try to clear it up a bit...

Question 1: How do i stop the filter air-lock problem?

Question 2: Will the cloudy water cause any ill-effects to my malawi's?

Im pretty new to this and its a bit of a fright at 10:30 on a saturday night... Im freaking out a bit so some sound advice a.s.a.p would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks In Advance

Jay

The cloudy water will not cause any harm to your fish (has happened to me many time without any problems after - just looks bad) you may find that the hose is full of slime (I think that it is protein or something)

As for the air lock I am not sure what you mean by that - my canisters get air in them after I clean them but once the air is passed through the problem is finished (try and fill the canister in a way that minimizes air - I usually remove the outlet hose from the canister and open the inlet until water is flowing out of the outlet into a bucket. then I will reattach the outlet hose and turn the canister on. this is only needed after you clean the canister which depending on fish numbers should not be done too often)

If you are getting air in the canister all the time without having opened it then there may be a problem with you filter. However I would think that if your filter in not leaking then this is not a problem.

Thanks Z, i seem to have cleared the air for now, but i know it will start again in a few days time as it keeps doing. Its been 3 months since i started the tank up so the canister is probably due for a clean, and ill take your advice on starting it up again with the outlet hose off. Here's hoping the filter isnt on its way out...

My experience is with the NCF 1500 which should be similar.

Firstly, you need to find out where the air is coming from.

Shut it down after it has been running for a while and check for leaks.

After servicing, when you re-fill the cannister make absolutely certain the lowest tray has the large seal around the outside of the tray and it is a good fit. Check the seals between trays are installed properly and are not damaged. Then check the large seal around the pump unit.

When you have cleaned and re-assembled the trays fill the unit up to just above the green seperator with tank water and leave it for a few minutes if possible. Assemble the unit and pump the primer a few times if it has one. Power up/prime until air is flushed from the system.

How far does your cannister need to lift the water?

How much is the "Tank Out" hose below water level?

At least somwhere to start.

Those people who only use Eheim of Fluval never experience problems like yours... :raisehand: honest.... :lol5:

HTH,

Old Dave
