prosavage
Hi team, I need it to neutralise chlorine from tap water, but just not sure where to get it in Sydney. Is it available to the public or do you need to hold some sort of licence to be able to purchase it? I went to Bunnings and they dont have it so asking all the aqua experts here
CThompson
Hi team, I need it to neutralise chlorine from tap water, but just not sure where to get it in Sydney. Is it available to the public or do you need to hold some sort of licence to be able to purchase it? I went to Bunnings and they dont have it so asking all the aqua experts here Sodium thiosulphate is actually a chemical used when developing films. It can also neutralise chlorine. If you want this for chlorine removal from tap water for water changes then this is not the correct chemical as I don’t believe it will neutralise chloramines. What you are after is a standard aquarium/tap water, water ager, of which there are many brands available. Probably the best is Prime, or Safe which is the active ingredient of Prime and a lot cheaper. If you still want sodium thiosulphate, look in film development outlets or perhaps a chemist. cyber_crimes
I agree with Craig. BUT If your after Sodium Thiosulphate try consolidated chemical company at Arndell Park. Expect to pay through the roof though as they charge like a wounded bull, but this will be your best bet to purchase in smaller quantities... prosavage
yeah I just want to get rid of chlorine and chloramine in tap water probably not worth the effort getting the crystals after what you guys have told me about here so is Prime a brand or is there a specific name I need to get when i go to my LFS? I'm after one that quite cost effective as I'll be changing water quite a lot and often too
Finn
Here is some information on Seachem Safe and Seachem Prime - hope this helps. You can buy this online fairly cheaply. Seachem Safe Safe™ is the complete and concentrated conditioner for both fresh and salt water. Safe™ removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Safe™ converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter. Safe™ may be used during tank cycling to alleviate ammonia/nitrite toxicity. Safe™ detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the biofilter to more efficiently remove them. Safe™ is non-acidic and will not impact pH. Safe™ will not overactivate skimmers. Use at start-up and whenever DIRECTIONS: To remove… • Chlorine: use 1 measure to each 80 L (20 gallons*) of tap water (removes 1 ppm). • Chloramine: use 1 measure to each 40 L (10 gallons*) of tap water (removes 4 ppm). • Ammonia: use 1 measure to each 16 L (4 gallons*) of tap water (removes 1 ppm). Do not overdose! To detoxify nitrite/nitrate in an emergency situation use up to 5 measures to each 40 L (10 gallons*). Use fish to gauge toxicity reduction as test kits will still show presence of nitrite/nitrate even when detoxified. May be added to aquarium directly, but is better if added to new water first. If adding directly to aquarium, base dose on aquarium volume. If temperature is > 30 °C (86 °F) cut dosing in half. Seachem Prime Prime™ is the complete and concentrated conditioner for both fresh and salt water. Prime™ removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Prime™ converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter. Prime™ may be used during tank cycling to alleviate ammonia/nitrite toxicity. Prime™ detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the biofilter to more efficiently remove them. It will also detoxify any heavy metals found in the tap water at typical concentration levels.Prime™ also promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat. Prime™ is non-acidic and will not impact pH. Prime™ will not overactivate skimmers. Use at start-up and whenever adding or replacing water. DIRECTIONS: Use 1 capful (5 mL) for each 200 L (50 gallons*) of new water. For smaller doses, please note each cap thread is approx. 1 mL). This dose removes approximately 0.6 mg/L ammonia, 3 mg/L chloramine, or 4 mg/L chlorine. May be added to aquarium directly, but better if added to new water first. If adding directly to aquarium, base dose on aquarium volume. Sulfur odor is normal. For exceptionally high chloramine concentrations, a double dose may be used safely. To detoxify nitrite in an emergency, up to 5 times normal dose may be used. If temperature is > 30 °C (86 °F) and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, use a half dose. mcloughlin2
Prime is the brand name so any worthwhile aquarium will know what your talking about if you mention it, but to be say ask for Seachem Prime. so is Prime a brand or is there a specific name I need to get when i go to my LFS? I'm after one that quite cost effective as I'll be changing water quite a lot and often too Prime is quite cost effective as it is relatively concentrated. It is available for purchase in large sizes if you enquire which will offer you a bulk purchase discount I suppose is the best way to put it. Richard
I'd grab a kilo of Safe if i were you. About $90 from our sponsor Addicted2Cichlids and it'll last you a lifetime. I got mine from them a year and a half ago when it was on special for $65 and i havent even used 1/32 of the stuff!
BJJ-Master
Try "Redox" ... But you'll probably only be able to buy 20/25kg bags ... "Prime" would be a better option , The Brand is Seachem who make a product called "prime" BTW
prosavage
Thanks guys I got a bottle of seachem prime the other day and have only used it twice, i dont have any holding tank, is it ok to put in the prime first in the tank first then fill in the tap water? CThompson
I would say yes to that. Better still, pre prepair water in separate container, pH, KH, temp and ager before putting water in. Craig
Robbo2232
All i do after is turn of the filter fill straight out of the tap add prime, let mix thru the water and turn on the filer, BUT you have to treat the whole tank just not the amount of water you have put in
