mcloughlin2
Depending how large the mark is it may be worth removing him from your colony as you don't want to end up with dirty fry. Dominant male electric yellows have been known to develop black marks on their bodies that has nothing to do with anything except the genetics of the fish. DFishkeeper
My understanding is that it is quite common for a dominant male to develop a blue/black "breeding blush" in the face and often also a thin moustache above the top lip. Any black marks in the body are certainly undesirable, but you are probably talking about hormones here. Cheers, Doug
hobcas
could be a bruise from fighting. lol il take it that you were joking lol one eye might be swolen but lol na. i still checked to see if it was a bruise Hey foti, I'm not sure if you are joking or not about the one swollen eye, however colour in EY's can also be influenced by diet, stress or through poor water conditions, bullying, change of tank, illness etc and a swollen eye often indicates less than ideal water parameters. I wouldn't be too quick to write this fellow off, there are many different variations of EY's some good, some not so good, perhaps a photo would allow someone to make a more informed judgment call on your boy. If you haven't done a water change and tank maintenance for a while do this and see if it makes a difference. I have a large colony of EY's (probably includes too many males) and through my observations when the males are competing for the services of the ladies some often show a darkening around the face and the black markings in the dorsal and anal fins intensifies. For me and I am sure not all will agree I think the presence of a wide black line through the dorsal fin as apposed to a thin one is a good indicator of a decent EY. The yellow can vary naturally and often be improved through diet where as the black dorsal line is genetic. Cheers Ross
