Why are flagtail prochilodus so expensive?

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on the price of flagtails. They seems to run about $100 under 10cm but from my searching it seems they are on the import list of species suitable for import. So why the massive cost? they should be about the same price as silver sharks should they not?

Any help appreciated before i spend $400 on 4 of em. Cheers.

Just because they are importable doesn't mean they are cheap... from our Singapore supplier the Flagtail is 5-6 times the price of the same size Silver Shark. They are also often out of stock.

Cheers

Ok thats fair enough, but 5-6 times a silver shark is still alot cheaper then what most ppl ask. How much would you sell flagtails for and at what size? cheers.

Also i made the comparison to silver sharks as these are becoming very rare in the wild, but are still quiet cheap to buy. Im a nobody and silver sharks cost me around $3

Surely it as simple as a supply and demand thing...if people want the fish then they are willing to pay for the fish so the price goes up...if interest decreases then the price drops ( as long as supply remains the same).

Arowanas are a case in point...they are not a particularly attractive or interesting fish but because they are the flavour of the month the price is still pretty high...once interest wanes the price will drop... :)

Ive done a bit of research on flagtails over night, and they seem to be very rare in the trade, thus bringing with them a high price.

As for the arowanas, ive been keeping fish since 1997 and this is the lowest ive ever seen aro's in australia. Ive seen them about 10cm for $200, thats only abit more expensive then saratogas and they are natives.

Personally i love arowanas and they have been popular in the aquarium trade for about 30 years, so hardly the flavour of the month i think.

But yeah with most things it is supply and demand i think though in the aquarium trade the difference is some things are not rare period!, just rare in this country = high price

Your doing well to pick up silver sharks for $3. Where from and how big? Surely thats some sort of special or you work at an aquarium.

Also silver sharks may be becoming rare in the wild (I have no idea as i havn't looked into it) but I think you will find that the majority are now being bred in asia and then exported, hence the availability in the wild would have no impact on price.

I dont buy from aquariums mcloughlin2, they're a joke! overpriced diseased fish in "most" cases. i buy private from forums such as this. There is a gentlemen near my home that sells them for $3 at about 5cm he also sells bristlenose for $2 and silver dollars for $3-4 depending on size. Its no secret he sells on alot of fish forums and also petlink.

I wish i worked in an aquarium, scratch that i wish i owned an aquarium lol, if im dreaming may aswell be my own boss! :D

Well I'm not sure whether he is breeding his own or perhaps he is just selling those fish to make room as $3 is about the price an aquarium would pay for a silver shark @ 5cm. Another thing you have to consider is alot of the flagtails would be imported by aquariums and therefore they have the same markup as other fish. The people who buy these are not going to then sell them down the track at wholesale price. They are going to try to get what they paid for them.

He is an onseller. He buys them in bulk from the wholesalers and sells them for a tiny bit more then he paid. He does it from his garage so he has no overheads in terms of location, rent etc. except his power bill is about $2K every quarter LOL. But he does do a small amount of herps also.
