ALR1
Hi all, I have an e-yellow that is currently holding. It is in a 6x2x2 tank where it has spaned a few times with about 4-5 surviving each time. I got a plastic fry tank with two levels and I was wondering if it was wise putting the holding female in there so that more fry could survive? I am not sure if it will be too stressed out in such a small space. Cheers
matt_frontosa
Hi mate if you seperate your electric yellow it would most likely get stressed just leave her in the six foot for two week after the spawning date then strip her you should get a bit more this time as she is still learning to breed. If you see other fishes stressing her out then put more caves so she can hide and brood the fry.

fry_2_buy
I've been breeding E.Y. for some time now and the reason your fish arn't surviving is most likely because of other predators in the tank and/or a lack of shelter for the fry to hide and still find food. My favourite way of maximising the number of fry from a spawn is to catch the female about 2 weeks in to her brooding. I would inspect the mouth and see how developed the fry are, and if they are able to swim on their own I would strip them from the mouth. Stripping is where you manually AND GENTLY open the mouth of the fish letting the baby fry swim or be spat out. This should be done in a sepate tank/container and the fry should not be left in the main tank. Nets/frysavers will probably not help you as I've seen and experienced whole broods of fish die because of predators sucking them through the net. The best way is to have a separate tank for the fry only. Hope this helps, John
