Barracuda
Hi I have a fish that needs to be quarantined, however I am wondering how long it will last if i dont have a filter in the QT tank (i can fit a heater and airstone). If I dont feed it for 3 days, will it survive for this long? I'm wanting to quarantine and medicate a dwarf gourami - it has developed some sort of red ulcer on it. I'm planning on using a multi-purpose medication (dont these meds kill the beneficial bacteria in the filter?) and leaving it in there for 3 days, so i cant really change the water. The tank it will be in is a small one, around 6L (something like 27x14x16cm). The fish itself, being a dwarf, is very small so this is more than enough space for it. The only thing is that my sponge filter would be too big for the tank. Thanks

I would be comfortable leaving a fish in there for 2 weeks with airstone and heater. You could also tie some filter wool around the airstone to catch any debris and clean it once a week. Im not sure what the red ulcer could be... Goodluck with it. Cheers Joel
klw
hi there, this red ulcer on your gourami is extremely common in dwarf gouramis's.over the years i had quite a few of these and they all got red ulcers, withered away and died.i wouldnt keep them again, and its a shame cause theyre such pretty fish.the water has to be super clean and i mean super clean!!!one grain of debris in their tank and they get ulcers.someone else might know if this can be treated but i never found anything.i just know their water has to be ultra clean to prevent this. Barracuda
Thanks for all the suggestions. I have decided not to take the risk, i have put it into a 2ft with a sponge filter. I am now wondering, if the multi purpose med kills the bacteria in the filter, what is the filter doing?
Josh
As far as I know a fish will live forever with out a filter, but you must do what the filter normally does, ie keep water clean. Josh
akroyd
The ulcers are probably going to be piscine tuberculosis IME. ie a Mycobacterium marinum infection. Traditionally there is no treatment. The fish will die, and if you add them to your tank you will never be able to get rid of the bacteria, and susceptible fish will die. There is some research that sugggests that maintaining the temperature at 37 degrees for some time will kill the bacteria. Dwarf gouramies can probably tolerate this temp IMO. Here's a reference that you might want to read; http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/pagerende...amp;pageindex=3 HTH BTW You can catch a Mycobacterium infection from your fish. Google would be a good idea for some quick research.
