easty01
just looking for some opinions on external overflows. seem relatively easy to constract but is it worth the risk?? noticed they are now selling them on ebay but are very pricey. iv had my 4ft tank for year and longed to set up a sump for it. its way to risky to try and drill this tank because of its age. can any one shed some light on the subject that most lfs recomend to stear clear of... Josh
I have designed one and had it made. I tested it in my fish room for 4 months to make sure it works and it was fine. I even turned off the power for a couple of days every couple of weeks to make sure it started again by itself. you do need to check them about once a week. Mine did start to fill with air but never enough to make it stop working properly. I would prefer to have my tanks drilled, but like you said, its sometime not worth it for an older tank. pjmowens
ive been running two 25mm pvc overflows on one of my tanks for a year and a half. never missed a beat. be very careful when making them and make sure all joints are primed/sealed and that the measurements/design is followed. drilling the tanks seems to be the way to go but this was my only option as - a) the tank was set up and running b) wasnt too sure on the age of the tank so i didnt want to risk it. before trusting them completely i ran mine through a series of tests. i was running only one at the time and it was handling the litreage fine, but i opted to install a second 'just in case'. patrick
