tootie
Hi, I found one of my female meleagris in shell dead with tail nipped at end. I have noticed that the males (presume as they are bigger) chasing the girls into the shells at times. 1. Do they bully the girls? 2. I am new to shellies and wondering what the ratio should be of males to females? I have a approx. 50 litre longer tank (don't know dimension unless measure them). I have grown 6 up from fry and now have 4 left. I think 2 males and 2 females (just going by size). Any feedback appreciated. Thanks. brucem
Hi there, I haven't kept meleagris, but my occies can be very agressive towards each other, with the male forcing females into shells and not letting them out, to the point of death. Some females seem to be in with the male one day and out the next. I have also had a group of 3cm fry, that were quite happy in the fry net, get stuck into each other when given the freedom of a 2ft tank, nipping off each of their tails to the point where they have not regrown. I always thought that meleagris were quieter. Maybe not. I would be trying to ensure you have a good spread of shells across the floor of the tank. Use rocks of plants to create some screens to try and create an "out of sight, out of mind" (hopefully!) landscape. Good luck with it Bruce
