Whats better?

It depends on your specific needs and fish. A hang on filter means you can not drop the water level very low (useful for concentrating food for fry or reducing medications). A hang on filter usually means customising tank lids or hoods and difficult to make escape proof. A hang on can not be used as a water pump to lift water, empty tanks or be placed into a bucket under gravel to create an even larger mechanical or biological filter. A hang on is noisier IMO due to the sound of cascading water. A hang on filter has larger filter area and easier to customise filter media. A hang on filter is will cool the tank better in summer but has more evaporation. A hang on is harder to direct water flow or reduce velocities.

I dont think I have helped you much but hopefully given you some ideas on what is best for you. I have a mix of internals, hang ons, canisters, fluidised beds, floating bead filters, sumps, overhead trickles and undergravels. All have their uses. The humble air driven sponge is a firm favourite.
