hello, ive just set up a 2ft tank i had spare with pacific blue eyes and have put 3 pieces of very light coloured driftwood in it.it looks great with plants and all but every 3-4 days the tank ends up that tannin stained you can hardly see in it. does anyone know how long the tannins will leech out for or if it will be a long time, what can i use to filter it out?i have put carbon in the filter but it has only made a slight difference.i water change weekly as well.

thanks in advance!

Sometimes if you boil the wood it will make it release the tannins faster, however it still takes a long time to completely remove it. You could use something like Purigen or Chemi-Pure in the filter. Apparently, some fish actually like the tannins, so it really depends on you.

it can take years for the color to stop coming out of the wood , i had to wait two years before this one piece of wood would stop floating , it is not hurting the fish or the water , you could try different spectrum of light , or take it out and soak it in the back yard for the next six months or more .

Lol. im have the same problem atm. I have an 8x2x2 in my lounge room that looks like a giant pot of tea. I boiled all my logs for over 4 days untill they stopped leeching into cold water.

A day in my tank and i could not see the back glass. Its been 4 months of weekly water changes and carbon and its still fairly thick in the water. Although what made a big difference was the addition of seachem matrix. It cleared it up very well although you can still see some tannins.

My advice would be get yourself some seachem carbon matrix, get 1 litre of the stuff, its better then other carbon as its activated and it lasts for about 6 months.

I have used carbon and It didn't work for me. I hear Purigen is the best but is pretty expensive.

I would recommend Bio Chem Zorb. A packet of that turned a 6x2x2 from black coffee to a bottle of Mount Franklin overnight.

the bio chem zorb might be the go,its only a 2ft tank so shouldnt be too expensive.just wanted to say that i used the bio chem zorb and within 12 hours the tank looks crystal!!!and it keeps working!!it looks so good thanks for recommending that.fantastic stuff!!!!

So then which is better value for money when dealing with larger tanks such as a 6x2x2-8x2x2? Its stated that Purigen treats 4,000L for every 1L of the product, thus a 250mL bottle would treat 1,000L. The 250mL bottles cost around $50 online which includes shipping. Bio Chem Zorb on the other hand is only available in 283g packs which treat 208L, these are priced at $20. So i would say the Purigen is much better value but does it work a lot better than BCZ?
