Priscacara
Hi , not sure if this is normal or not so not too worried yet but all my fish are behaving a bit oddly. I got some new juvenile Cobwe (1 about 5cm) and 6cm P. Hongi on Saturday to put in with my 6 juvenile (5cm) P. Saulosi. All seems fine with no water parameters changing so far but starting Monday the saulosi starting swimming up and down the back corner near heater and filter intake with a few laps of the back length of the tank then back to the corner laps. Now most of the fish in the tank are hanging out there and doing the same thing. At other times they cruise around investigating the rest of the tank as per normal, feeding properly and doing all of what I would consider normal fish activities. There are no signs of stress at all (unless the corner swimming is stress), most come over to check me out when I go over to the tank again as per normal. Not sure if I'm getting worried over nothing, it does seem to be occuring more when the lights are on but this could just be when i first notice it rather than a cause as they were fine with the lighting previously. Parameters are 0 nitrite, 0 ammonia, ph 8.3, gh 360. Cheers, Les.
Priscacara
Nobody else has had their fish behaving this way? I still dont see anything wrong, parameters are still all good and no overly agressive fish to cause a panic. The chichlid expert at the shop only works Saturdays and he is also the breeder of them so night give him a call tomorrow.
ziad
Hi Les, It is relatively common for fish to do this. I find that once one fish starts they all follow. I had a colony of tropheus do this for a good two months and it drove me insane as the tank is in my lounge room. However they eventually stopped. I also find that new fish do this as they are getting use to the new tank. cheers
YAL05T
Out of curiosity how big is the tank and do you run any air stones/air curtains or any other way of diffusing oxygen in the tank?
Citypainter
Its a new fish thing. Give them time and they will find and guard territories and strat killing eachother. Enjoy it while you can.
Priscacara
Tx for the replies, I'm like a new parent wondering if things are "normal" I think :-). The tank is an aquaone ar 980, about 4 foot old measurement, 200 litres or so. The filtration is the built in one for the time being with no air stones as there is lots of water movement to oxygenate the water and small size of fish. In the not too distant future though I want to do away with the built in and put in a large canister filter as I know when the fish get bigger the original just wont handle the load. My mind is at ease now so thanks again. Inhabitants of the tank are :- 5 x P. saulosi female largest around 5.5cm, smallest 4.5 1 x P. saulosi male 7cm 1 x L. hongi male 7cm 1 x L. hongi female 6cm 1 x C. cobwe male 7cm 3 x C. cobwe female 4cm 1 x Plecostomus (sailfin) approx 12cm Any additional fish are going to be single specimens of species, any suggestions more than welcome.
