JULIDOCHROMIS BREEDERS

Hi,

I had a pair of juli. ornatus (who have bred in past) in a tank on there own. 1 of them (female I think) has just died.

I tried putting in a spare female (def opposite sex) and the male started cornering it.

Then I thought I would move both to my large 4ft tank however there they started 'mouth fighting' with each other.

I have now seperated them again.

Is it possible for a male who has had a bond to form a pair with another female? If so, what is the best way to do it?

Any advice from people experienced in breeding these fish would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Shirley

It is not as simple as putting boy and girl se two are not happy with the single choice they each have. If they do not want each other, then you need to offer more choices.

See "albie's" add in FS section he has an adult female.

Yeah Julies can be funny that way it is best to give him a few to choose from and he can pick a new mate. The other thing I have found was to put them in a community tank and that way they are distracted from each other and see if they pair up. I have done this a few times with varying success.

That's a very interesting comment, one which I have taken on board myself. :thumb

When I put them in a 4ft community tank they started having a go at each other. Perhaps if I buy the female from Albie (as suggested) then I can add it and see if love ignites.

My community tank is african cichlids and I've had the spare female in there for a while with no probs. I know ph should be slightly higher for tangs. Is this okay?

Possibly adding a few more females as mentioned may mean less agression on one particular female which may ultimately lead to successful breeding as females may accept the male when they are good and ready. Just a thought, hope it works out for you.

The female ornatus I ended up being from a different area (so she is up for sale, still with no success so will take her to LFS tomorrow and trade her in). She is in the community tank with my female and the male is in his tank on his own. So after she goes I will add the male to the community tank again and see what happens.

Tootie
