Barracuda
Hi, just wondering what the point of extra filtration is? More fish? Less water changes? I have seen people on this forum with 3 eheim canister filters! I currently have a 300L tank with a Fluval 405 (400L) canister, and soon to add a large sponge filter capable of 480L. What will be the benefits of adding in the sponge filter? Thanks
spedwards
The biggest reason I like to have multiple filters is redundancy! If you've only got one filter and it dies what can you do? It also is good when it comes time to clean them out, you rotate the cleaning so one filter continues on and the other gets cleaned. But it also allows you to do targeted filtering, setting up a general purpose canister with bio and mech media down to fine filtering wool will result in the filter needing maintenance more often. Having one setup for mech primarily (ie. noodle, foam, wool) and another setup for bio will allow your bio filter to run for longer between clean outs where you could potentially kill the filter. On my 350L tank I've got 2 Eheim Classics and a cheap Aqua Pro canister. The Eheims are full of mechanical media down to fine wool for water polishing, and the Aqua Pro is full of bio media. The Eheims continue to pump well as the gunk fills up. I've also got a UV steriliser hanging on the tank.
mcloughlin2
In short quick points the benefits are: - Rotation of cleaning (One filter one month, the other the next) - Contingency filter if one fails. - Better setup (One biological filter, one mechanical) - Due to two different outlets one can be positioned to circulate water from bottom of tank whilst the other could just be surface disturbance. It looks like spedwards beat me to it but oh well I've typed it now.
CThompson
The only thing I'd add here is that any form of biological media will benifit from mechanical cleaning before the water gets to it. So if you have water going straight from tank to dedicated biofilter, it will get just as dirty as the dedicated mechanical filtration section/filter.
