genetik_defekt
As title says. I want to know the difference between carbon and activated carbon. There is clearly some difference as the price itself states this, i would just like to know the finer details. carbon is about $35 for 5 kilos and activated carbon is about $39 for 1.2 kilos. Priscacara
Quote from wikipedia. Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal or activated coal, is a form of carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous and thus to have a very large surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions. The page I quoted from has a lot more details, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activated_carbon
oz_gooner
But in aquarium terms what would the difference be?
friendlyburger
the greater the surface area, the more efective it will be, therefore the smaller amoun t you need. I don't use it personal as its needs replacing regularly. Depending what style of filtration (sump, canister, hang on,corner/air pump) you are using there may be better options. mcloughlin2
In aquarium terms it basically means that activated carbon will absorb more chemicals due to its higher surface area.
