Mick86
Hey all, I've officially had my first spawning of fish! I'm more keen on Africans but I had 3 small Rivulatus and 2 small Oscars in my 4l x 2w x 1h coffee table tank. I've had them and the tank set up for about a week and my Rivulatus had already spawned after about 5 days. The eggs are in a side turned pot and the female is gaurding them vigilantly. There are around 200 eggs i'm guessing as they are very small as the adults would only be just of breeding size. I was just wondering how long I should wait after the eggs hatch before I remove the fry? Also there isn't much aggression in the tank at the moment, does it get worse once the eggs hatch and the fry are free swimming? Any other advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I definately will need the help.

Priscacara
Congrats on the spawn , unfortunately I'm new to cichlids so cant advise. From what I've read on cichlids as a whole though I would expect a bit more agression once they hatch but if they arent agressive now I'd think the level wouldnt get out of hand. Just my thoughts though so hopefully someone with more experience can advise better. My only breeding experience other than live bearers were jewel cichlids ( no idea on proper name), a single spawn from rams and discus.
yellow
I was just wondering how long I should wait after the eggs hatch before I remove the fry? id remove some once they become free swimming. id only take about thirty and leave the rest with the parents. theyll get eaten but at least it gives the parents the chance to raise them. plus, green terrors are common and being in towoomba might make it difficult to move the fry on once theyre big enough. Also there isn't much aggression in the tank at the moment, does it get worse once the eggs hatch and the fry are free swimming? maybe, in a 4x2 you might get away with it but only time will tell. your young oscars will smash the fry regardless so if there is aggression i doubt itll be there for long. oscars and gt's are fairly evenly matched in the aggression department too so it might work out alright as the oscars should just avoid them as the gt's move thier fry around the tank. that being said, americans can be unpredictable so if it does get out of control just remove the fry altogether and thatll fix it straight away. id personally just take a couple and leave the rest there to see how it goes, as i said raising all the fry will probably be a waste of your time anyway
