newcichlid
Hi I just transferred my calvus fry from a 2ft tank to a 3ftx8x18 tank. There are about 1.5-2cm. Did the usual, 50% old water, 50% new water and 2 out of the 4 corner filter has been in my main tank (same water parameters) seeding for the last 2 weeks. Airpump rating 720lph with 4 outlets. Last night when i transferred them, they all look alright, eating well. This morning had more than 50% dead. Tested my water, Ammonia and Nitrite nil, gH & kH the same as all my other tanks. Dont have a nitrate test kit. Also noticed kinda like a fluff in/around the frys' mouths. Both big and smaller size dead so not restricted to weaker or smaller ones. Anyone any ideas? Is it the water? Lack of oxygen, need a stronger airpump? Cheers Eric
Joel
Hey mate, Were the temps of the tank water the same when you transferred? it could be stress if they were not. The 'fluff' in the mouths sounds like a fungus of soughts. You could try melafix or pimafix or some other kind of fungal medication. I would treat the whole tank. I would suggest keeping up water changes, getting a fungal med, check temperature, make sure all dead fry are removed ASAP. Hope all goes well. Cheers Joel The heater was on to heat the water before I moved the fry. Another question was asked about the tank and I replied that I forgot to clean the tank before moving the fry. It was used as it from the lfs. Also there were dust in the tank, could that explain the fluff? If it was the tank cos I didn't clean it what should I do? Water change? albie
You said you did a 50/50 water change! Hope the fresh water you added was aged and not out of the tap. I killed lots and lots of them too, untill i started using 100% old tank water and waiting a week before doing 20-25% water changes. hope this helps, even though it may be a little late. I currently do my water change straight from the tap and never had a problem yet. Used tap water when water changed the 2ft tank, no problem except recently when i posted if the water in melb has changed as i had a few deaths but nothing major like today. JPM1976
That sounds like the problem changing the water straight out of the tap to the tank.Should leave the water at least for a few hours imo to do a water change.WHat water conditioner did u use? Davo
In my opinion you do not have to do water changes with aged water. I have been doing it with tap water for years as long as you add the water ager straight away. Dave.

I have been doing it with tap water for years as long as you add the water ager straight away. Dave. The catch here is the word "aged". The water doesn’t have to have birthday candles on a cake before it is used. However, it does have to be such that adding it to the tank does NOT change the existing water chemistry (including temp) significantly. I frequently do 90+% water changes with fry without single loss. Some (all?) water "agers" (there's that word again) work by breaking chloramine down to it's two parts, ammonia and chlorine, I know a (now "X") Tropheus breeder, well known to these pages who wouldn't use water till about a week had passed since he used water ager (safe) as he got ammonia readings for up to a week in his water change barrels after he added it to the water. It is my understanding that water ages work on contact, but their first step is to break the bond as mentioned above and to let the tanks bacteria to break down the ammonia. Young fish are more susceptible to changes in water (during a water change), and can be more susceptible to ammonia (broken down from chloramine?), and I know calvus are delicate when young. What albie is talking about here I think is actually water from another tank, and if there was anyone who I would listen to advice about calvus on, it is him. I don't think he had water change containers, so if it were me, I'd use a water change tank/barrel/container and preprepair all water, preadjusting temp, pH, KH etc and let it sit for a week before use. albie
Thank you CT, i think you explained it better than i could ever have done. I didn't breed and raise thousands by accident! (and i will be doing it again shortly.....lol.
newcichlid
Thank you all for the helpful replies. I think I will go get me a 50L bucket from the Reject Shop this weekend.
genetik_defekt
either way a 50% water change is too much, unless it an emergency dude. Always having big tanks i fill straight from the garden hose, no buckets for me. but the most i ever do is 30-35% half is way to much.
Colfish
Adult tangs can handle a 50% water change, providing all the paremeters are pre set and the water is 'aged' and you do it on weekly/ fortnigtly basis. you can't change that volume of water monthly. tangs need a steady paremeter. fry however are a different story. they cannot tolerate large water changes. small [25% max] changes weekly will see them thrive. Alto fry are even less tolerant, smaller volumes and clean filters will usualy see them through. touchy to feed as well, go with live bbs. using a 2nd tank from an lfs [or even your best mate] without throughly cleaning it before use is just begging for trouble. you just never know what's happened in it. i hope what fry you have left pull through. everyone's advice is offered in good faith, it's up to you to follow through on what sounds right. hth; cheers
