Josh,

I have a 6x2x2 with the following:

5 Fossorochromis Rostratus

5 Nimbochromis Livingstonii

3 Cyrtocara Moorii

4 Synodontis Multipunctatus

There are only 2 medium sized rock piles (mostly for the catties). About 3/4 of the tank is open sand.

I'm a bit of a fan of large haps.

Yellow - that's a great looking Mbuna tank! :thumb Do you have any success breeding any there (or only Hybrids)?

90% of the fish that are in there breed like rabbits. the only ones that dont are the ones that are too young to do so and my colony of afra cobwe because theyre on the bottom rung of the pecking order.

or only Hybrids)?

surprisingly i get this question alot. ive been keeping my mbuna like this for nine years now and ive never had an instance of cross breeding. thats not to say that it cant happen because ive spoken to members of this board that have had problems but in general ive found that if you make sure that you dont have any lone individuals (ie lone males and females from species) then youll usually be right. i also make sure that i dont have any similarly coloured fish ie species that have yellow females like johanni, salousi, msobo and the like; i mean thats just asking for trouble. i also make sure that when a species starts breeding i see it spawn for the first time before i start catching fish and raising them, that way i know theyre right the first time and ive found that from there onwards the females always go back to the same male. if i dont see it the first time and i come in and shes holding i just dont bother milking them.

Isn't a 3 footer abit to small for 2 red empress males?

haha :cryblow: i never wanted any red empress the story goes i bought a colony of jacobfreibergi Otto from st george 1 male 3 females next morning j Otto was dead <_< bought another male to replace it (they didn't want to sell just the male but finally got it ) 2 of the three females got colour so that’s the story of the red empress no breeding was ever in the picture nor having 2 males in a small tank very new to cichlids but learning fast

moto female jacobfreibergi Otto can turn into male red empress <_< you might not beleive it :dntknw: but it happened $110 otto colony male died females were red empress replaced otto $45 5cm  will not go back :blink

at the time it was i like that fish (j otto) ill take it; how much! well i guess i can say he was the start of my obsession with cichlids and this forum :thumbup:

will not turn back and i will only learn more as time goes !

i have my 6' now aswell!

in a week or 2 will continue stocking it with more fish will start a new post try get some photos up and of fish i have added no's and all updates.
