Finnicky61
Hi guys - my first post, so be kind! LOL Just wondering what your advice would be to my problem. I inherited my Cichlid enthusiasm from my son since he has moved out of home. (Not complaining, but still learning) I have 5 tanks in my home (2 x 18" 1x 2' 1 x 3' and a lovely 6' display tank) At one stage last year I had a pair of Red Empress mating every 6 weeks, and being a mother (softie in other words) I couldn't help but keep the fry.. result about 200 babies of various ages! I gave some away, but I am left with HEAPS of them! My LFS is happy to buy the males off me as they sell really quickly once they colour up, but what to do with all the females??? Q: Is it acceptable for "brothers and sisters" to breed? (I know not to let different "species" mate) My LFS guy said he would "take" the females (in other words no credit for them, but I don't want people buying colonys from the same family if they shouldn't breed together) Any suggestions or advice welcome. t0h0t4u
My LFS takes anything from me at $1/cm and with more rare fish I know I can bargain with him but it’s better to sell on here as you get a better price for your fish but they have to be pretty good quality. If you give those females to the LFS he will sell them the same price as the males probably. I find in general females are harder to come by than males with any type of fish. I suggest you put a post on here. if not try another LFS.
theantmac
hmm, true, the best ratio is 1 male to 3 or more females....the fish shops often sell things with colour but not things without colour as they seem harder to sell. this is unless its explained to the newbie customer that females are also needed with the male as the females are important with the red empress due to the males aggression if kept alone in the tank... and id say to advertise on here and if you put them up for a cheap price chances are they'll sell quite easily, though it also depends on how many people out there are looking for red empress' fish. i am actually looking for some atm but dont have my lisence ...
