Aquarium Design wanted with internal reef

Hi Guys,

anyone has a design for a tank with internal self contained reef? I want to get something made that is similar to what the ORCA tanks used for salt water, but the only difference is that I need it to work in a planted tank. This is to get rid of Canister filters.

I have made several in the past,

Just a reminder that the tank/s would need to be deeper to accommidate the pumps, bio balls and a bit of plumbing.

cheers

The design of the internal overflow/ filter is really dependent on what you want to house as media ( biofloss, siporax, peat moss, bioballs etc? also depends on flow rate you want through the internal filter which will dictate the size of pump you need which will change the dimensions of the chamber for the pump.

Depends on whether you also want to house mechanical/ chemical filtration components in your filter

Rough guide is 3x/ hour of the tank size through the filter.

i.e. if you tank is 60L then you will need a pump rated at 180lph.

There are alot of considerations and planning you will need to research and undertake.

Standard glass is called float glass.

You cannot use toughened glass as this will shatter when you try and cut this.

laminate glass can be used for baffles but is too hard to cut yourself and there is no point to use this.

Hope this helps.

awesome, thanks for the input. Have placed an order for an 18" CUBE with custom reef like filtration compartment.

May have got a bit ripped off, went retail. Actually I will post up here see what people think of it.

It will have 10mm bottom and 8mm sides with black silicone and recessed tank lids.

It is a special order so we will see, hopefully it will be well made with no bubbles in the glass or the silicone.

The price was $141.

Keep an eye on this thread if you would like to see the tank design on Sunday night.
