Sponge Filter

Do sponge filters do ample filtration on its own? Will I be able to keep one in a 2 foot tank without any other filtration? Also, how often does it need to be cleaned? Are discus able to be kept with it or do they really require a canister filter?

Thanks for your advice :)

i run my whole rack off sponge filters. they work well for me. it depends on-

* how heavily the tanks are to be stocked

* what type of fish your are trying to keep

* whether you mind a bit of poo on the floor as they are not very good mechnical filters

it would probably cost you about $50 bucks for a sponge filter, airpump, tubing and one way valve if you didnt already have them, so i would probably just recommend getting a hang on back filter.

dont know too much about discus but you should be able to provided there is enough filtration. i clean mine roughly once a month in water-change water and alternate which filter i clean in tanks with multiple filters.

I don't keep discus but my mother does. She tells me that discus need near perfect water at all times or they can get sick pretty quickly. I wouldn't risk sponge filters on discus unless you plan to do water changes nearly every day. Sponges would be fine for cichlids.
