Nornicle
for a 1.5-2 inch base I think 80 kgs should about do it!
novafishy
thanks nornicle! another question: would it be a different thickness of substrate if i plan to keep a malawi or african tank? (cos the dig in the substrate)
ViS
I personally don't like much substrate for africans. I only have a scattering (maybe 5 - 6 kg) of sand in each 4x2 tank. I also paint my polystyrene with a combo of black, brown, green and yellow to simulate rock / sand etc. If they uncover a section of sand, at least they are not looking at a stark white bottom. This ensures no waste is ever trapped and the sand gets turned over constantly.
Nornicle
yeh when i had my 4X2 i only used about 20 kgs of coral sand to put a very fine layer over the bottom.. i suppose with your tangs they tend to make big nests in the ground? im not much of african cichlid man, but seeing the picture of those foai's in their nest it seems you need like 2 ft of sand!!
