jamie2548
Hi Everyone. Just starting to get back into cich's after 5 years without a tank Im wanting to get most of the south american types ,geophagus sp and was wondering is pool filter sand ok (washed of coarse) being ground munchers I was afraid it would be too fine? Should I use a coral sand instead? Trying to get an ocean reef look Thankful for any help. Jamie
oakes
I wouldn’t use coral sand in a SA tank due to the impact it may have on pH. I use pool filter sand in my central American tank. Pool filter sand is not that fine,i would guess at about 1mm grains. In fact still just coarse enough that i can use a gravel vac. The brand i used (sorry can’t remember the name) is very light in colour, almost white. The effect is more like a sand river bed than an ocean reef look. jamie2548
Thanks for the advice. I ll have a look at the local pool shop and see what's available.I think the sand may give the same effect I'm after anyway.
