jay_g_hunter
Hi I have a new 4ft tank and was wondering how many cichlids it will hold? And at what rate should i add them?
krellious
depends on max size, aggression levels of the fish. also what filter/ filters and how many caves/ rocks. we need more info dude. there are to many variables.

I have an Aqua One 1000 external filter, with a smaller clip-on box filter on the other side. I have plenty of rocks...limestone in the middle and lava type rocks either side, basically the entire back wall is a bit of a rockwall/cave system. I grabbed some fish today... 2 x electric yellows 2 x cobalt blues 1 x Bristlenose for janitor duties What do you recommend from here? Also see my later post on Nitrogen Cycles... Appreciate your help!
GundamCichlid
Be patience, do not rush in adding new fish and do not overfeed. Ensure your tank has been cycle properly. Put some cycle to increase bacteria in your tank. IMHO, Just wait another 1-2 weeks before adding new fish. I believe blue dolphin would be nice to be add in your tank. Enjoy your new tank... bdo.
I agree with the be patient advice! I seem to be in a similar position as you mate. I've just set up my 4 footer after having only a 2ft for a few months. I've got a heap of rocks in there which basically form by whole back drop now and there are plenty of caves and tunnels plus I've got an Eheim Pro II 2126 cannister. I have initially put only four fish in (afra, demasoni, lombardoi and electric blue) which all came out of the 2ft. I'm really keen to get the rest of them (maingano and two petricola) in there and start buying some new ones but I've been careful... The four fish have only been in there for five days and I was keen to put in the other three but beforehand I nipped up to the LFS and got my water checked. Unfortunately there was too much ammonia in there to put in any extra so I've got to wait another few days or week or whatever til I put the rest in, which is annoying, but I'm glad I checked first as it saved a possible bad ending. You can buy some chemicals to speed up the bacteria cycle, which I think Gundam was saying, otherwise its just a waiting game. But this can also be sped up a little I believe by putting some old/used filter media (which if you dont have your LFS might be kind enough to provide you with) into the new filter/tank as well as doing a decent size water change to flush out some of the ammonia. Hope this helps! I'm also unsure as to how many fish I'll be able to get in there but I'm hoping for something about the 15 mark? The way I look at it I've got plenty of caves and hiding places as well as good filtration, so long as I pick the species correctly and none clash too much. Do others agree with this?
