Electric Blues - Getting some Color

I notice that my fish will loose their color when moved or when sleeping (Neons most noticeably)

However I am wondering about my new Electric Blue Cichlids ?

I have had them in their new tank for about 48hrs and although their color has deepened from almost white, to showing some stripes on a darker background skin.

They hardly show a hint of blue :unsure

Can anyone offer an explanation and when I can expect their color to come through ?

BTW: This is my first Cichlid tank although I have had other community tanks for years

This is time on this site & my first post here !

Electric Blue female doesn;t have any blue at all....and what is your Ph since you have a nice big driftwood and anubis?

Cheers

Thanks for the reply

I just tested the water

Hardness - 240

Alkalinity - 120

PH - 6.5

Nitrate - 160

I have go a piece of coral in the water to keep the hardness up, as I believe this is what Cichlids like ?

It is only a small tank at 20L but has weekly water changes and good filtration.

Can I pick if I have a male (apart from waiting to see if he changes color) ?

Cheers

Hmmm .... that's the trouble with ordering online !

I saw the pictures online and thought "Cool, they will look good in the tank !"

I presumed that because my yellows are all bright yellow the Electric Blues would be the same

Thanks

Just a thought, but I would remove the driftwood and replace it with some dead coral or limestone to buffer your pH up to around 8. Africans don't like water that acidic. Sure they might survive, but I doubt they would be really enjoying it, and breeding would be non-existent even when they are big enough. So Multiple Tank Syndrome hasn't set in yet.

It will. It always does :lol2:

Yeah... MTS has set in, I have 3 tanks already.

Problem is I am in a very remote area (Gove NT) & shipping costs are outrageous for bulky items.

My other tanks are 25 and 40 litre

The 20 L is an isolation tank & the 40 L has mixed natives and few exotics

This is my first Cichlid tank though !

At what size will I be able to tell if I have a male blue ? they are between 3 and 4 cm ATM.
