Noddy65
Hi all Well Im going to move house in the next few months and will be setting up a dedicated fish room in an outside garage. I have a friend who can weld (and hopefully get at cost) metal for the stands (he's a welder ). The stands will be three tier holding three 6 x 2 x 2 ( thereabouts). I want them made in this configuration so I can use 3 footers or 2 footers if I want. Hopefully it will be flexable enough to let me have the tanks I want. Im after some advice on what to use. SHS is nice but Im not sure what thickness metal to use or size to use to hold up the tanks. Id prefer not to have a centre leg. I currently have a three tier holding three 6 x 2 x2 made out of angle iron. There is no central leg and there is no flex in the stand. The angle iron on the current stand is 40 mm by 40 mm by 5 mm. So....what size SHS should I use or what size angle iron should I use? Is a double rail advisable or could I increase the size of the SHS to compensate? What are people using for their metal stands? Ive seen some nice pic's on the forum but theres no specifications? Ive searched the forum and havent been able to find any posts answering this specific question. chorrylan
I have stands made of 40x40x3.5mm that I'd be happy holding 2 6x2x2's and would probably be trying for 4.5mm or 5mm for wall thickness if trying to hold 3 6x2x2's on it. That said; if I was building a new room I'd be considering really strongly the option of using dexion or similar pallet racking. (it might limit you a little as dexion racking tends to have a fairly high profile so stackign 3 6x2x2's would get pretty high)

I was looking at the pallet racking option but if i can get these made for just materail Ill hopefully be well ahead? I hope? Mike
chorrylan
Is that 40 x 40 SHS your using? or angle iron? SHS.... angle would be at a disadvantage for a rack as a) you need greater wall thickness and/or section dimensions to compensate for the fact you only have one weight bearing side; and b) you have a sharper edge to bash your knuckles and bits of glass one when working on the tanks. If you're trying to fit 3 2' tiers in you need every bit of inter-tank space you can get and knuckle-wacking will be a popular pasttime.
trofius
legs rhs 50x50 3mm gal Rails rhs 75x50 3mm gal front to backs can be what ever is left of this..or fits out of the 8m lengths (way cheaper to buy like this) That is going to be one fn high stand, >2.6m and will weigh nearly 2 tonnes when full of water, so 500kg on each foot!!! hope you have a really good high impact floor.. I have made 3 tier tanks for those dimensions but mine hold tanks 6x2x18inches high, or 2x3 footers, or 3x2 footers all the feet are adjustable allowing for up to 2 inches of un evenness. Pics of stands and stuff
