Hey guys,

Have my tank setup and running great. Water parameters seem to be fine and dandy :)

Current stock is as follows (similar sizing at 6-8cm) :

1 Buffalo Head :- Steatocranus Casuarius : Male by the looks - Acts like he owns all the lower caves

1 F1 Moba Frontosa - One of the smaller in size - gets chased around a fair bit.

1 Peackock - Pink/Orange/Blue (aggro)

1 Mbuna - Yellow mainly , black dorsal and kinda showing purple stripes (aggro)

1 Unknown - Maybe peacock or mbuna - Mainly blue (see photo)

1 Blue Dolphin - Usually well behaved....Usually

1 Venustus - (aggro - mainly towards next closest in size [Moba] )

1 Gold Spot Pleco 12cm+

1 Auratus - Usually well behaved

1 Malawi Eye Biter - Well behaved

My dilemma is - I would like to stock more F1 Frontosa (Only moba if that is required - otherwised mixed)

So I am not keen on having extremely expensive fish constantly harrassed.

The Eye biter, Frontosa, Pleco and Buffalohead were all introduced a week after the other fish. Prior to the new fish going in they all seemed to mostly get along and swam around the tank happily. Since the introduction of the new fish (At which point I rearanged the tank and added more rock etc) , they all mostly hide ( except Frontosa/Blue Dolphin ) and no-one is getting along generally. They are more timid when I go for a look and the tank conditions seem fine.

My house is extremely hot so I have a good sized chiller keeping the tank at 27-28 degrees, Fluval Fx5 , 2 x Otto 2000lph Internal Filters, 2 x Jager 300w Heaters and a cheapo cannister filter through the chiller.

Tomorrow I think I am going to get credit at my LFS and take them all back except the Frontosa/Buffalohead/Pleco unless someone can give me some advice.

I know this is a giant wall of text but...

Help me stock my tank! Please

So if I go and get credit :- what other fish can I stock with the Frontosa? F1 Moba seem to be few and far between, I don't want him to get lonely :p

I was told the Venustus and the Eye Biter would be good tank mates, but the Venustus is probably the worst behaved towards the Moba :S

I like Venustus too. The eyebiter has me paranoid..Awesome looking fish, but I do not wish to come home to a Moba with 1 Eye..

Or maybe do I need to have 3 or 4 Venustus in with him?

So confused...

it depends you can make it a species tank with only frontosas otherwise you could house calvus and other tangs in with your frontosas i had a fronjtosa tank up until a few months back it was 4x2x2 and housed 10 frontosas 6 black calvus 6 gold head compressiceps and a pleco and they all got along fine you could also add some leilupi hope that helps

cheers stuart

Please if you do intend to get more Fonnies ONLY get Moba. There are plenty of Moba going around other variants are not so easy to come by. I say this because I would hate down the line to for them to get confused or sold as something that they are not. Or worse still breed with something other than a moba.

Enough of that now of the rest of your stocking list. Personally I would get rid of the Venustus and the Dimi (eyebiter) a s they will get agro when they are older and it highly probable that you will end up with a Venustus or a Dimi and that is it. I would also get rid of the auratus as they are aggressive little sods along with your mbuna you have listed. The mainly blue one looks like some form of Zebra perhaps a cobalt blue but I not 100% sure. If you like the dolphin he would be OK to stay.

So essentially what I am saying is take those fish back and get some more. I think you could keep some electric yellows with them they are quite passive and possible some passive peacocks like Baenschi anything of the smaller peacocks really to ad some colour and movement. Perhapos you could get other tangs but it depends on what you have available and how much you are prepared to risk. You could also get 6-8 more Moba. There are a number of Qld forums you could try to source them or Mike W usually has them and can ship them to you.

In saying all that I have not kept fronnies and I have only recently picked up a few F1 "kitumba" and intend to keep them by themselves in a 6x2x2. Others may have more to offer.

cheers

Frontosa are a fairly peaceful fish that dont like being harrassed too much, they say the best tankmates for frontosa are other frontosa. mainly beacause most other african species (especially mbuna) are aggressive and will nip at their fins causing the fronnys to hide and get stressed out.

i have 9 ikola frontosa in a 6x2x2 and they get along fine with theyre tankmates.

they are 3 humpheads, a calvus, a pleco, 2 male peacocks and 4 glass perch i caught in tallebudgera creek.

i would trade everything except your humphead and pleco. then get more frontosa to make a nice colony. if you want other species in there keep males only and watch them closely to make sure theyre not harassing the fronnys too much.

if you want more fronnys i suggest that you go and see darren/sealord1au here on the goldy. he regularly has top quality F1 mobas for sale.

oh one more thing, where did you buy that yellow fish with the stripes?
