bobandchez
Hi Everyone My family and I will be moving from Orange to the central coast in a few weeks and will be leaving on a Thursday and arriving on a Friday at our new home. (spending a night in a motel). I am wondering will my fish (1 x tank of approx 40 multis and 1 x tank long fin bristlenose and fry) be able to survive the two days in foam boxes with a battery operated air pump. Should I place a heater in it overnight at the motel or does anyone have any other ways to transport the fish. Once their I will be using prime in their tanks and doing frequent water changes as cycling their new homes wont be possible. Any thoughts, comments or help gratefully accepted. Thanks in advance Bob
krellious
i have transported fish over night. use lots of bags so they get lots of air. Or get clove oil, i have used it once. sedates the fish if used in small doses. kills if used in large. 1 drop prt bag should be more then enough to calm your fish down
genetik_defekt
ive heard some nasty things about using clove oil though so if you decide to use it, do heaps of research and make sure you dont buggeR up. P.S im pretty sure you need to remove a fish from clove oil within 1 minute or they can suffer brain damage, dunno if this is right but they cant breath when in it from memory
Bedge
We did a move last year, but only from Willoughby to St Ives (about a 20 minute drive). I had one massive Fene. Just one fish. I asked my local aquarium to take care of him for a few days and they did free of charge. He went there the day before we moved and I got a pet taxi / transport place to pick him up and drop him home a few days later. We were able to save all the filter medium so it worked out for us. Possibly a expensive option but I found it to work well with minimal stress on our fish. I think I would happily pay this money again when we move in the future. Eddie Salita
Please dont use clove oil unless you are experienced with it. It can easily kill with the wrong dosage. I dont think there is any need for such steps, especially for such small fish. If you purge (starve for 2-3 days) before your journey and do a water change about 5 days before you shouldnt have any problems at all No food means no poo, and no poo means no ammonia etc... Temps shouldnt be a big problem this time of year, so you could even use buckets. A little low temp is good as it makes more oxygen avail, and slows the fish down a bit. Combined with the darkness, they will last for ages. Bristlenose can handle lower temps, and tangs dont mind lower temps either. If the temp gets too much below 20 or so degrees you might wish to look at some way of warming them. But short term low temps shouldnt be a worry. What you do have to be wary of is setting up the new tanks without having your cycle in place. So go very easy on the feeding for a while. If you can get an air filter seeded between now and then you can anchor it in the styro box and hook it up to the air pump. Then you will have some sort of biological filtering for when you set up the tanks again. Be wary of shells rolling around and squashing small fish. ANother thing on extended journeys is having the container in direct sunlight for any decent period will elevate temps dangerously. So keep them in the shade. High temps I worry about more. Having them in the sun or resting next to the gearbox hump in the car etc... will heat the water very quickly even in styrofoam. cheers, Jason. bobandchez
Thanks everyone for the advice. Have never used clove oil and wont be trying this time. I have seeded air filters in both tanks and will ensure they are in the boxes with the fish. Should the temperature get to low over night I will carry a heater and use during the night at the motel. Once again thanks for the advise Bob
