CordlezToaster
Hi im a new user who has joined up.(go easy im still learning & reading) I have recently purchased a new fishtank 126litre, im in the process of setting it up for cichlids and i was told to purchase some pool filter sand instead of gravel. So i went to clark rubber and bought a 20kg bag for $15 and have started to clean it following this guide http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/cleaning_sand.php But after many repeated attempts its still cloudy! like the colour of diet lemon cordial. Is this normal? is the filter sand i got no good? should i seek an alternate sand instead? Thanks for your time. Troy

CordlezToaster
Welcome to the forum! Did you buy sand or something called zeolite? Michiel Hi Michiel Its sand atleast thats whats written on the bag. The girlfriend and i even went to the trouble of putting a sample size in a glass and tried to clean it using the method from the guide above with no luck! Ill take some picture of it when i get home tonight, will the filter clean this type of thing?
Michiel
The filter should clear it up but the issue is dissolved silicates. At too high levels this is damaging to fish. I would be best to replace the water at least once. Good luck M
AzFish
You could always try a flocculator? Seachem Clarity is one brand that I can think of.

Michiel
The cloudiness will last a while. The importance is to get the access dissolved silicates out of the water. A flocculant will allow for the particles to sink to the bottom but you still need to siphon it out. Normally cloudiness disappears within 3 days.
