bristlenose2008
Hi Guys, unsure what to look for in a fish feeder. Taken a look at the single chamber EHEIM but since I need 3 it is becoming an expensive solution. Please give me your thoughts, and even places to buy it cheap. Most online stores are on holidays right now, and do not take orders as I have just found out the other day. Thanks, Damien
CThompson
If you're going for five or so days, let the fish go hungry.

Ged
If you're going for five or so days, let the fish go hungry. The best alternative if it only for a short time. I had problems with the food absorbing moisture and then not coming out at the correct rate. You should look for one that enables you to attach an airline to prevent this problem. Have you looked at our sponsors?

Or when i go away for more than a week (usually 2-3 weeks) i show someone how to feed them then leave notes on every tank with instructions

Some people still think that you have to 'feed them untill they stop eating, cause they must be hungry.' If you have a fishy friend (someone who understands a little bit is good) this is a good option. Rob
CThompson
I had problems with the food absorbing moisture and then not coming out at the correct rate. You should look for one that enables you to attach an airline to prevent this problem. This problem is caused by the fact the evaporation from the tank affects the feeder due to its close proximity to the tank (resting on top). The way around this is to have the feeder somewhat remote from the tank, feeding into a tube which runs down to the tank. I imagine automatic feeder which uses an airline will cause the enclosed food to go stale? Craig
bristlenose2008
this holiday just became expensive. I have given in to the EHEIM ones after all. Not sure why anything would go stale even if there is vapor. Our aquarium has glass lids and with one lid slightly open when the machine rotates once or up-to four times a day, the vapor simply has no time to enter the food compartment. Vapor and humidity is unlikely to be an issue. The only problem is figuring out the feeding quantity, so we are experimenting now.
Lee Miller
G'day, Good decision, I have 11 tanks and 11 Eheim auto feeders. I've found that the best food to use with the feeders is NLS Cichlid Formula 1mm pellets. It flows well and stays dry. Flake absorbs moisture from the air and usually clogs the feeder within 2 to 3 days. I adjust the feeder opening to about 3 to 4mm and feed with one rotation twice a day. Good luck!
