newcichlid
Hi All I have read many post on how to setup a hatchery and chose to to give it a go. Currently I am using a 2L coke bottle inverted and mounted on the bottom half as the base. I added 1tsp baking soda, 2 heaped tbs rock salt, 1/2 tsp of eggs, 1L water and turn on the bubble till it looks like boiling water. No light and no heater. Lack of equipment at that time but changing it for next by putting the setup in a bucket of water and put a heater in the bucket. Would i still need a light? Anyways, after 30hrs, I stop the bubble and let it settle for 30mins, used a torch to attract them to one spot and extracted them into a container. I think hatch rate was about 80-85%. The calvus fry loved it better than the frozen version. I wasnt too sure how much was i suppose to extract. So left the rest overnight. And kept the ones that i extracted in the fridge for storage. THis morning, the ones in the hatchery are still going but the ones in the fridge are not moving. I have calvus 120 new frys and 6 x3mth old. The bbs is suppose to be for a few days feed. Question. 1. Should I just leave the bbs in the hatchery and extract/feed as needed or should i tip the top layer(where the hatched egg shells) out and pour the rest into a container for storage or extract as much then tip the rest out? 2. Althought the ones in the fridge are not moving, are they still alive? I notice that the calvus frys go crazy feedin on the live ones compared to the frozen. Any other method that ppl use? Would like to hear it to get some ideas. Thank you Eric
genetik_defekt
i dont believe you can relly "store" them buddy. They live a little while, but its best too only culture a small amount at one time, so as there is little waste.
albie
i dont believe you can relly "store" them buddy. They live a little while, but its best too only culture a small amount at one time, so as there is little waste. Here goes. I have raised thousands of calvus and comps on bbs. I use a glass bottle cos its heavy, tie it so it sits in your fish tank. 750ml tank water, (tap water may contain chemicals)4-5 tea spoons rock salt. Airate for 24hrs. Remove airstone and sit bottle in front of tank light. Use a straw with @ 2ft clear hose attached. All the bbs are attracted to the light. Watching the hose, suck them up,and drop them into fry tank.Remember to turn filters off, and on when you finish. When finished feeding them, place bottle back in fish tank and put airstone back in and restart filters. Hope this helps. Bbs last @ 3 days. Start a new bottle 2nd day to have constant supply.
