chorrylan
hi Sweety :-) welcome to the forum. Just a note of warning for when you read things like I keep Africans --> Lake Tanganyika --> Tropheus (5 variants) an experienced fish keeper's "favourite" fish is quite likely to be something that is challenging to keep (successfully) so the very attributes that make it appealing to them could make them potentially frustrating and less suitable for someone looking to start off. I tend to run an assortment of fish for an assortment of reasons: - Some African cichlids from lake Tanganyika including Tropheus Kasanga, Frontosa Moba and Kitumba, Chalinochromis ndobhoi, Firefin compressiceps, Opthalmotilapia ventralis, Lamprologus speciosus largely because they're in the challenging end of the spectrum and I like them. - Some african cichlids from lake Malawi including electric yellows, maingano and electric blues largely because they're nice and colourful so petshops like 'em and something has to pay for the tangs. - catfish from south america ranging from bristlenose that are there to help pay the fish bills through calico longfins, peppermints, L333 and L397's adding a bit more interest and challenge towards the end of that list (though it turns out that the L333's are doing most of the fishy-bill paying at the moment) -some guppies 'cos I realised a little while ago that I'd never ever kept and so I bought some in from Thailand (it was also an experiment in direct purchasing from overseas suppliers and getting fish imported/transshipped as I'd never done that before either) Pretty much all of my fish have features/attributes/characteristics that appeal to me in some way or I wouldn't be bothering to keep 'em. hmmm I've never ever kept any american cichlids so maybe that's the next trail to go wandering down
dogboy
im with chorrylan on this one, i have; tanganyikans beacause they are interesting and a challenge, i have T duboisi, T bemba, Multies, Julidochromis transcriptus gombe , N cylindricus, N lelupi, chalinochromis popelini. malawis cos they are pretty to look at, easyish to keep and breed well to help pay some bills. maingano , electric yellow and blue, sulphur crests, peacocks, pseudotropheus elongatus... catfish to clean the glass and bristlenoses breeding. my plan is to only buy tangs from now on, but i never stick to plans
genetik_defekt
wow rod54, those rams are fantastic!! best little guys i think ive ever seen!! ohsweetness, I think you will find with most cichlid lovers there is always a variety in the midst. Ive kept africans and americans and they are both fantastic. Im about to do my first tank in 4 years and i think i will do americans. Its funny, having africans is kinda like keeping mice. They run around in their little colonies getting work done fighting amongst eachother and cleaning a nice surface area on which to get funky with whatever female happens to take interest. but on the other hand you have americans, not so much a fish as more a small animal like a dog or something. Um a dog that lives solely in a glass box filled with water :S lol they tend to interact more with their owner on a personal level i think. Either way you go they are both great. newcichlid
Hi I started with fish from Lake Malawi and Tanganyika, which soon became Lake Tanganyika only and now making the move to keeping just different tropheus variants. Cheers Eric
