Breeding Ps Flavus

Hi,

Have 1 male and 6 females in tank and am trying to breed but not alot has happened so far. They must be about 8cms in size. 1 of the females seems a bit bossy and when she is around the male flees from her and loses his colouration. I am wondering if this is preventing breeding and also wondering of whether to remove her or not? Do they have to be a certain size before they will breed? If anyone is successful in breeding this group have you any useful tips?

Cheers,

are you sure that the girls and boys are who what they say they are..we have bred flavus and we havent had the boys loose their colour cause of the girls we usually get the girls colouring up and pretending to be the boys so they keep away once they have bred.

I also had a dominate female that would color up yellow until the male wanted to spawn with the females and then she would go back to grey/brown color.

It could be a female. I bred these fish for about 5 years now and have seen this many times

If I remove a flavus from breeding tank and place in community tank with african cichlids (kadanga, E. yellow and blue, a couple of aulonocara, Lab mbamba, pseudotroph aceii, Bristlenose, clown loach and 1 juli) is it likely to cause them grief? IT has been quite dominant in breeding tank.

Hi Josh,

I was sure this one was male but you may have a point. THe difference is though that he (?) goes a greenish yellow colour and doesn't ever look grey/brown. He used to be a lot brighter until this female has been put in there. She's a bit bigger than him - does that make a difference? What is the best way to sex these fish? Thanks.

Usually the color is the best way to determine sex, but obviously this isnt always the case.

Vent sexing would work also.

The size of the female could also be a factor. Has she ever spawned?

She hasn't spawned since I have had her however maybe before _ I don't know for sure. Is it safe to move her in with my community tank or is she likely to be aggressive towards my other cichlids? I am quite confused now about what I've got (in terms of sexes). Perhaps I could take her and him to LFS to get him to vent them (as I've never done that before). THey have been together now for at least 6 months so if there was mixed sexes would they have bred, do you think?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

  • 1 month later...

I bred Ps flavus in a standard 2ft tank for a while wioth no problems. Provide a couple of hiding spots and good ratios and you should have no problems breeding them.

Still have no idea who is what sex in the tank apart from the one female who is currently holding eggs. So obviously I have at least 1 male and 1 female. I have moved her to a nursery as she seems to be getting harrassed by her tankmates. How long roughly is the incubation period for flavus or does it vary for every female?

Cheers.
