Help! We have Frontosa fry!

Hi guys,

We just purchased a large male & female frontosa tonight & were putting them in our tank when all of a sudden there were around 10 baby frontosas swimming around.

We have grabbed our small tank & filled it with tank water, separated the fry into this tank & are currently in the process of getting the old filter & heater running on it (just upgraded our tank last week).

The question is, what to do now? How do we raise them?

Hey,

Firstly congrats on the fry!

Frontosa fry can be quite weak when it comes to changes in water and since they've moved from one tank to yours i would try to keep them there for now. Keep them in the fry saver for now and feed them chopped live black worms or some baby brine shrimp, they should also be big enough to eat NLS grow pellets.

I would say leave them in the fry saver for afew weeks and make sure the new tank they are moved to has a aged filter and aged water from another tank, i've found fry to also be intollerant of even the slightest nitrate levels.

You should be fine though, just keep them well fed in a fry saver for now.

HTH,

Richard.

Bugger, they are in a tank with half their old water from the tank they were in when we bought them & half from our new tank. We don't have a fry saver, but so far they seem ok in the new tank. Both filters on both our tanks were seasoned... one has been in operation for years & the new filter on our larger tank was running on our old tank for around a month to help season it & we have been testing water daily to make sure it has been stable.

Will pop out & get some baby shrimp brine in the morning, but do they need to be fed tonight? How often do we need to feed them?

Congrats on the fry. You seem to be doing all the right things. They should be fine just make sure that they are eating. I breed 7 bar frontosa and i milk mine as eggs cause she eats them otherwise and i hatch them myself. Once there egg sacks are gone i put them in a tank on there own. i have about 50 out in the fish room now and there all doing fine. I feed mine spectrum grow and they are thriving. I feed them 3 times a day when i can otherwise they get feed at least twice a day.

cheers mark
